The East Haven boys’ basketball team defeated Branford in its regular-season finale and then claimed a win over Foran in the quarterfinals of the SCC Division II Tournament last week. The Yellowjackets, who have an overall record of 8-4, are playing Hand in the semifinal round this week.
On March 15, the Easties claimed a 54-38 victory at Branford in their last matchup of the regular season. The game was tied 20-20 at halftime, after which East Haven outscored the Hornets in both the third (19-10) and fourth (15-8) quarters to pull away for the win.
Senior Trey Garea scored 19 points for the Yellowjackets, and senior Ian Reynolds had 18 points in the victory. Senior Alias Ford scored eight points, while fellow senior Nick Furino added five points.
Then on March 20, 2nd-seeded East Haven opened up the SCC Division II Tournament by hosting No. 10 Foran for a quarterfinal contest and won the game by a 55-32 score. The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 14-8 first-quarter lead and held a 23-15 halftime advantage over the Lions. East Haven put the game away by outscoring Foran 22-4 during the third quarter to bring a 45-19 lead into the fourth.
Reynolds netted 18 points to help Head Coach Ricky Narracci’s squad notch the victory. Furino scored 10 points, Garea had nine points, Ford netted seven points, and junior Shea Carasone added five points.
East Haven hosted No. 3 seed Hand in the SCC Division II Tournament semifinals on March 23 (after press time). With a win, the Yellowjackets would play the winner of No. 1 seed Lyman Hall and No. 4 Branford in the championship game on Friday, March 26.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey squad returned from a team quarantine to compete in the SCC-SWC Division II Tournament last week. In its first game since Feb. 27, the 11th-seeded Yellowjackets took a 4-1 loss at No. 6 seed Watertown-Pomperaug (W-P) in a first-round game on March 18. East Haven finished with an overall record of 0-5 for the season.
With the game tied 0-0 after the first period, W-P scored two goals in the second period to take a 2-0 lead into the third. East Haven cut it to 2-1 when Valley Regional junior Duncan Rider scored a goal during the final frame. However, W-P came back with more two goals and went on to get the 4-1 victory. Junior goalie Ethan Roach of East Haven made 22 saves in the loss.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The East Haven girls’ indoor track team competed against Hillhouse in a meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center on March 17. The Yellowjackets recorded a couple of first-place finishes to go with a few more solid showings at the meet.
Senior Kisha Francois took first place in the 300-meter dash by running a time of 43.89 seconds for East Haven. Junior Morgan D’Auria claimed first in the pole vault by clearing a height of 6 feet-1 inch.
Sophomore Jessica Urban finished first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.55 and also placed second in the high jump by clearing 4-8. Senior Emily Mazzucco took third place in both the 55 hurdles (11.44) and the high jump (4-8). Junior Juliana Espinoza finished second in the 1,000 by running a time of 3:57.48.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The East Haven boys’ indoor track squad traveled to Floyd Little Athletic Center to face Hillhouse for a meet on March 17 and captured a couple of victories in the competition.
Junior Ethar Al-Hawari finished first in the 1,000 by timing in with a mark of 3:14.07 for the Easties. Senior Radames Figueroa took first place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.00 seconds.
Senior Dhruv Patel placed second in the 55 hurdles by running a time of 10.04. Junior Justin Hernandez finished third for the shot put with a toss of 25 feet-6 inches
