The North Haven girls' basketball team posted a convincing victory over Cheshire in its last game of the regular season and then notched an overwhelming win versus Foran in an SCC Division II Tournament quarterfinal game last week. North Haven, which has an overall record of 8-5, is facing West Haven in the semifinals of the tournament this week.
North Haven hosted Cheshire for its regular-season finale and defeated the Rams by a 64-41 score on March 15. North Haven jumped out to a 20-5 first-quarter lead versus Cheshire and was up 41-18 at halftime. The two teams played even basketball during the second half as North Haven came away with the 23-point win.
Sophomore Emma Liedke recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points to go with 10 rebounds and three blocks for North Haven. Fellow sophomore Julia Ball also scored 14 points and had four steals in the victory. Senior Olivia Stefanik netted seven points in the win. Sarah Puzone scored six points and had seven rebounds, senior Carly Fresher had six points with four assists, and sophomore Olivia Johnson also scored six points for North Haven. Freshman Ava Johnson scored five points and grabbed seven rebounds.
On March 19, No. 3 seed North Haven hosted No. 6 Foran for a quarterfinal game in the SCC Division II Tournament. North Haven, which had earned a first-round bye, claimed a 57-26 versus the Lions to move into the semifinal round.
North Haven got out to another quick start to grabbing a 14-4 lead over Foran in the first quarter. The second quarter was closer, but North Haven still had a 9-7 edge to take a 23-11 lead into the break. North Haven broke the game open by outscoring Foran 16-3 during the third quarter to take a 39-14 command to the fourth. North Haven went on to win the fourth quarter by an 18-12 margin to salt away the 31-point win.
Stefanik scored 14 points and had three steals for North Haven. Liedke scored 12 points to go with nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals in the victory. Ball added 11 points to help North Haven prevail. Puzone had five points with five boards and three steals, while Fresher scored five points and corralled five steals for Head Coach Tom Blake's squad.
North Haven played at No. 2 seed West Haven in the semifinals of the SCC Division II Tournament on March 22 (after press time). If North Haven wins, it would face the winner of top-seeded Sacred Heart Academy and No. 5 Cheshire in the championship game on Thursday, March 25.
Boys' Basketball
The North Haven boys' basketball team picked up its first win of the year and its first win with Head Coach Danny Oglesby by earning a victory at Cheshire in its regular-season finale last week. North Haven went on to take a loss against Career in the first round of the SCC Division II Tournament later in the week.
On March 15, North Haven was on the road to face Cheshire and earned its first win of the season by claiming a 43-39 victory over the Rams. North Haven held a 13-9 lead after the first quarter, but Cheshire outscored North Haven 4-2 in the second quarter and 15-11 in the third to bring a 28-26 lead into the fourth. However, North Haven rallied back by outscoring the Rams 17-11 during the final frame to walk off the floor with the team's first win with Coach Oglesby.
Freshman Adam Pandolfi turned in a big performance by scoring 18 points for North Haven. Fellow freshman Matt Bosticco scored eight points to help North Haven notch the win. Sophomore Dante Velez added six points on the night.
On March 18, 9th-seeded North Haven opened play in the SCC Division II Tournament by playing a first-round game versus No. 8 seed Career on the road. North Haven took a 56-21 loss to Career to finish the season with an overall record of 1-12.
Girls' Ice Hockey
The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls' ice hockey squad saw its final two regular-season games get canceled as a result of a team quarantine that also prevented the Blades from competing in the SCC Tournament.
The Blades' scheduled March 16 game against Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton-Shelton-New Milford was canceled, as was their game versus Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall-O'Brien Tech that was slated to be played on March 17.
A-NH-C would have competed in the SCC Tournament that is taking place this week, but is unable to do so as a result of the quarantine. The team had gone into quarantine due to potential exposure to COVID-19 two weeks ago. The Blades finished the season with a record of 4-2-1.
