03/21/2021 12:00 AMThe Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors co-op boys’ swimming and diving team finished its regular season with a bang by earning a 94-92 victory versus Cheshire in a virtual meet last week. The Warriors, who feature athletes from East Haven, Guilford, North Branford, and North Haven, posted an overall record of 8-2 to finish in a three-way tie for the SCC Division I regular-season title with Cheshire and Xavier, both of which also went 8-2 this year.
The Warriors’ meet versus Cheshire took place on March 16. GNH competed at Walter Gawrych Community Pool, while the Rams competed at the Cheshire Community Pool that same day.
Two days later, the Warriors were back at Walter Gawrych Community Pool to turn in their performances for the SCC Virtual Championship, which is a postseason meet. The other teams in the SCC compete throughout this week, after which all of the athletes’ performances in every event will be tabulated in order to score out the meet, determine the team standings, and crown a champion.
On March 20, the SCC Diving Championship took place as a live event at Sheehan High School. The points scored at this meet count in the team standings for the overall SCC Championship. North Haven sophomore Christian Butler finished in third place by posting a lifetime-best score of 404.45 points for his 11-dive performance, earning a spot on the All-SCC Team as a result. North Haven’s Tanner Powell, a senior captain for the Warriors, came in 16th place with a total score of 236.95 points in the diving competition.
A few days prior to competing in SCCs, the Warriors captured a dramatic win versus Cheshire in their regular-season finale. The meet came down to the final event—the 400 freestyle relay—and GNH’s team of Guilford junior Finn Henry, East Haven junior Hethon Foster, Guilford senior Dan Kamen, and East Haven sophomore Brendan Conners took first place with a time of 3:22.33 to secure the victory.
Henry also took first place in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:43.92 and finished first in the 100 freestyle by recording a season-best mark of 48.37 for GNH. Conners claimed victory in the 200 individual medley (1:57.83) and also won the 100 backstroke (54.99). Foster finished first in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 52.93 to help the Warriors defeat the Rams. He also swam a season-best time of 22.45 in the 50 freestyle.
Powell finished with a lifetime-best total of 151.80 points for a six-dive routine at the meet. Swimmers who posted lifetime-best times included Guilford senior David Zhang in the 100 backstroke (58.11), Guilford freshman Alex Hansen in the 100 butterfly (1:00.69), Guilford freshman Carter Bryan in the 100 freestyle (1:03.34), Guilford freshman Sam Mayo in the 500 freestyle (5:37.95), North Branford sophomore Patrick Cucchiarelli in the 100 butterfly (1:04.08), and North Haven senior Victor Zito in the 100 butterfly (1:04.44).
Connor Coyne, a senior captain from North Branford, swam a season-best time of 1:06.37 in the 100 breaststroke. Kamen, also a senior captain, notched season-best marks in both the 200 freestyle (1:54.73) and the 500 freestyle (5:09.68) to help GNH grab a share of the divisional title with its big win against Cheshire.
