The Hand boys’ basketball team had a busy stretch with five games on its schedule last week. The Tigers came away from the slate with four victories to improve their record to 6-4 on the year. Hand earned wins over Branford, Hillhouse, Hamden, and North Haven to go with a loss to Sheehan last week.
The Tigers started off their week by claiming a 70-48 victory at Branford on March 8. Junior Tyler Favre scored 13 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks for Hand in the win. Seniors Ryan Collins and Scott Testori both scored 10 points, while freshman Kyle Hoffman had nine points for the Tigers.
The following night, Hand hosted Hillhouse and won the game by a 59-52 score. Senior Nick Donofrio netted 20 points for the Tigers. Favre and Hoffman scored 11 points apiece in the victory.
The day after that, Hand took a 55-42 road loss to Sheehan. Favre had a big game by scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 boards for the Tigers. Hoffman had 10 points in the defeat.
On March 11, Hand claimed a 71-50 home win against Hamden. The Tigers then wrapped up their week by recording a 93-35 win at North Haven on March 12.
Junior Danny Hilmer scored 21 points for Hand in the North Haven victory. Hoffman and junior Trey Adams had 12 points apiece, while sophomore Hudson Geremia scored 10 points for the Tigers. Donofrio scored eight points, junior Morgan Veth had seven points, and senior Mike Travisano chipped in with six points.
Girls’ Basketball
The Hand girls’ basketball team claimed three road wins last week to boost its record to 10-1 with one game left in the regular season. The Tigers earned wins at Lyman Hall, Hillhouse, and North Haven in recent action.
Hand kicked off its week by posting a 55-18 victory at Lyman Hall on March 8. Junior Brooke Salutari scored 14 points for the Tigers in the win. Sophomore Natalie Lucas had 11 points, senior Maddie Thomas scored 10 points, and junior Sophia Coppola added six points to help Hand prevail.
The following night, Hand played a road game versus Hillhouse and won the contest by a 48-35 score. Coppola scored 18 points for the Tigers, going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Coco Rourke scored nine points in the victory.
Then on March 12, Hand was back on the road to face North Haven and claimed a 57-30 victory. Coppola scored 16 points for the Tigers in the win. Salutari scored 11 points, sophomore Maya Blomberg had nine points, Lucas scored eight points, and Rourke added five points on the night.
Hand played Guilford in its regular-season finale on March 15 (after press time). After that, the Tigers are slated to open play in the SCC Division I Tournament with a quarterfinal game on Friday, March 19.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand/Coginchaug/Valley/H-K girls’ ice hockey team saw the lone game on its schedule get postponed last week as the team went into quarantine due to potential exposure to COVID-19.
The Tigers were slated to play Amity-North Haven-Cheshire on March 10, but the game has been postponed indefinitely. The team’s scheduled March 15 regular-season finale against Law/ND-Fairfield/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug has been canceled. The Tigers have a record of 2-6 on the year.
Boys’ Fencing
The Hand boys’ fencing squad defeated North Haven in its lone meet of the week. On March 11, the Tigers faced North Haven on the road and won the contest by a 15-12 score.
Junior sabre fencer Billy Conroy won all of his bouts for Hand on the day. Junior épée fencer Stephen Gentil and sophomore Jay Boyer also claimed victories to help the Tigers prevail.
Girls’ Fencing
The Hand girls’ fencing team remained unbeaten on the season by defeating North Haven last week. The Tigers competed against North Haven for a road meet on March 11 and came away from the contest with a 14-13 victory.
Freshman Arianna Takyar went undefeated for the Tigers’ épée team against North Haven. Freshman Anna Ferrucci and Lily Paine each had two victories for the Hand sabre squad.
