The Guilford girls’ ice hockey team won in its lone game of the week to improve its record to 5-1 for the season. On March 5, the Grizzlies posted an 8-0 shutout over Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton-Shelton-New Milford at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton.
Freshman Sophia Cuozzo and junior Maddie Epke each scored three goals for Guilford in the victory. Epke also dished out two assists, and Cuozzo had one assist. Senior Haley Kruczek and sophomore Kim Evans also scored a goal for the Grizzlies. Junior goalie Julia McDonald recorded her first shutout of the season by making 11 saves.
Boys’ Basketball
The Guilford boys’ basketball team took two road losses last week and is now 3-6 on the year. The Grizzlies took defeats to Xavier and East Haven in recent action.
Guilford started off the week by dropping a 46-44 decision at Xavier on March 3. It was a back-and-forth game that saw Guilford bring a 38-31 lead in the fourth quarter. However, the Falcons outscored the Grizzlies 15-6 in the final frame and took the lead for good by hitting a basket with just seconds left in the contest.
Sophomore Kevin Goldberg scored 13 points for Guilford. Senior Jake Ciocca scored 12 points, and sophomore Justin Hess had 11 points in the loss.
On March 5, Guilford played a road game versus East Haven and lost by the score of 42-34. Holding a one-point lead at halftime, East Haven outscored the Grizzlies 13-5 in the third quarter to take a 29-20 lead into the fourth and went on to get the win.
Hess netted 11 points for Guilford on the night. Goldberg scored seven points, while Ciocca and sophomore Luke St. Marie added six points apiece.
Girls’ Basketball
The Guilford girls’ basketball team lost home games against Mercy and East Haven in its last two matchups. The Grizzlies are 0-9 on the season.
In its first game of the week, Guilford took a 48-23 defeat to Mercy at home on March 2. The Grizzlies were only down 15-12 at halftime, but the Tigers outscored Guilford 33-11 in the second half to pull way for the victory.
Senior Moira Kellaher and junior Faith O’Donnell both scored seven points for Guilford. Junior Miabella Diaz had four points.
Three days later, the Grizzlies hosted East Haven and dropped a 60-53 decision in overtime. Kellaher scored 16 points for Guilford in the game. O’Donnell scored 12 points, junior Miabella Diaz had 11 points, and sophomore Ava Lepro scored eight points.
Gymnastics
Sophomore Ella Esposito represented Guilford as a team-of-one when the Hand gymnastics squad competed against Hamden at New Era Gymnastics on March 6. Just like last year, Esposito trains with the team at Hand and then competes on behalf of Guilford at the Tigers’ meets.
Esposito turned in a solid performance on the beam when Hand faced Hamden last week. Esposito finished in third place for the beam event with a score of 7.9. Hand won the meet by a 127.2-91.5 score to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team competed in a pair of virtual meets last week. Bolstered by strong performances from several Guilford students, Warriors moved to 6-1 on the season after defeating Hand and Fairfield Prep.
GNH earned a 95-76 win against Hand on March 2. Three days later, the Warriors faced Fairfield Prep and prevailed 95-86.
GNH turned in several lifetime-best performances between its two meets last week. One of those performances came from North Haven sophomore Christian Butler, who set a school record total for diving by posting a score of 264.22 points in the win against Fairfield Prep. Fellow North Haven students Joe O’Connor and Tanner Powell, who are both seniors, also set lifetime bests for the diving competition by scoring 233.62 and 127.12 points, respectively, as part of last week’s action.
North Haven senior Ray Lewis swam lifetime-best times in the 200 freestyle (2:36.95) and the 500 freestyle (7:53.21) last week. Victor Zito, a freshman at North Haven, recorded lifetime bests in the 200 freestyle (2:08.29) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.55). East Haven junior Pavlo Melnyk set a lifetime best in the 100 freestyle (1:00.23), while Guilford freshman Alex Hansen did a lifetime-best time in the 100 butterfly (1:01.76).
The Warriors also saw several swimmers record season-best times last week. The athletes who did so included Guilford senior Dan Kamen in the 100 freestyle (52.35) and 200 freestyle (1:56.79), Guilford junior Finn Henry in the 50 free (23.05), the 200 free (1:44.64), the 500 free (4:47.03), and the 100 butterfly (54.16); Guilford freshman Will Cong in the 200 individual medley (2:23.35); and Guilford freshman Carter Bryan in the 50 free (29.98), the 100 free (1:05.07), and the 100 breaststroke (1:22.29).
Also swimming season-best times were North Haven senior Cam Cargan in the 50 free (23.63) and the 100 free (52.36), North Branford senior Connor Coyne in the 100 free (55.78) and the 200 IM (2:08.74), East Haven junior Hethon Foster in the 100 free (49.98), the 500 free (5:06.74), and the 200 IM (2:08.63); and East Haven sophomore Brendan Conners in the 200 free (1:49.92) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.19).
GNH also celebrated its eight seniors when the team hosted its Senior Night meet when facing Fairfield Prep on March 5. The Warriors’ seniors are Kamen, Powell, and Coyne, who are the captains; along with O’Connor, Lewis, Cargan, Alan Penna of Guilford, and David Zhang of Guilford.
