Branford Boys’ Hoops Makes it Five-Straight Wins; Girls’ Hoops Drops a Few Contests

Boys’ Basketball

The Branford boys’ basketball team recorded two more victories last week to boost its record to 6-2 on the season. The Hornets have now won five-straight games following their recent triumphs versus Career and Sheehan.

Branford started off its week by claiming a 54-47 victory versus Career in a home game on March 1. Branford held an 11-6 lead after the first quarter and was up 24-19 at halftime. The Hornets outscored Career 13-9 in the third quarter to bring a 37-28 lead into the fourth on their way to the victory.

Freshman Jake Palluzzi scored 16 points for Branford in the win. Junior Dylan Sachs scored 10 points, senior Dominic Bonanno had nine points, and fellow senior Tucker Jacobson scored eight points to help the Hornets prevail.

Branford continued its winning ways by earning a 73-68 victory at Sheehan in a road game the very next day. The Hornets stormed out to a 20-11 first-quarter advantage and then outscored Sheehan 22-10 in the second quarter for a 42-21 lead at the break. The Titans tried to claw their way back in the game by outscoring Branford 47-31 during the second half, but the Hornets were able to hold off Sheehan’s comeback effort and walk away with the five-point victory.

Jacobson had a huge game by scoring 22 points for Branford, while Palluzzi also turned in a big performance with 20 points on the night. Sachs scored 14 points in the win, and Bonanno had 13 points for the Hornets.

Girls’ Basketball

The Branford girls’ basketball team moved to 1-6 on the season after losing three games last week. The Hornets took defeats to Sheehan, Lyman Hall, and Hand in their recent contests.

On March 2, Branford took a 34-17 loss against Sheehan in a home game. Sheehan held a 7-4 lead after the first quarter and was up 13-7 at halftime. The Titans won both the third (11-3) and fourth (10-8) quarters to pull away for the win.

Freshman Lauren Thompson scored eight points for the Hornets. Senior Gabby Lucertini had seven points in the loss.

The following day, Branford hosted Lyman Hall and lost by a 36-32 score. Branford was up 5-4 after one and held a 16-14 halftime advantage in the game. Lyman Hall then outscored the Hornets 14-2 in the third quarter to take a 28-18 lead into the fourth. Branford rallied by outscoring Lyman Hall 14-8 in fourth quarter, but was unable to complete the comeback and took a four-point loss.

Lucertini scored 14 points for the Hornets. Thompson had eight points, while sophomore Lauren Kendrick scored five points.

In its last matchup of the week, Branford took a 76-23 loss to Hand in a road game on March 5. Thompson scored 15 points for the Hornets in the game.
