The North Haven girls’ basketball team claimed victory in two of its three games last week to improve its record to 5-2 on the year. North Haven took a loss to Mercy, but bounced back with victories versus Branford and Guilford later in the week.
North Haven dropped a 53-39 decision against Mercy in a home game on Feb. 22. After the two teams were tied 11-11 after the first quarter, Mercy outscored North Haven in the second (14-9), third (11-7), and fourth (17-12) quarters to come away with the win.
Senior Sarah Puzone scored 10 points for North Haven in the contest. Sophomores Emma Liedke and Julia Ball both scored seven points, while senior Emily Konopka had six points. Liedke also had nine rebounds to go with two steals in the game. Puzone had six rebounds and two steals, senior Carly Fresher had three assists with two steals, and sophomore Olivia Johnson also had two steals for North Haven.
On Feb. 24, North Haven hosted Branford and posted a 49-36 victory over the Hornets at Fred Kelly Gymnasium. Holding a 23-21 lead at halftime, North Haven went on to outscore Branford in both the (14-7) and (12-8) fourth quarters to pull away for the win.
Puzone and Liedke scored 11 points apiece in the victory. Senior Olivia Stefanik had 10 points, and Ball added seven points for North Haven. On top of her 11 points, Puzone also pulled down 10 rebounds and had seven steals in the win. Liedke also had a double-double by grabbing 10 boards and getting three steals to go with her 11-point performance. Fresher had six assists and three steals, Stefanik also had three steals, and Johnson had two steals for North Haven.
Two nights later, North Haven played a road game versus Guilford and edged out the Grizzlies by a 36-34 final. North Haven had a 31-23 lead entering the fourth quarter and then held off Guilford’s comeback bid to secure the two-point victory.
Ball scored 14 points for North Haven in the win. Liedke scored six points, while Fresher and Konopka netted five points apiece. Liedke had another huge game on the glass by gathering 16 rebounds in the victory.
Boys’ Basketball
The North Haven boys’ basketball team moved to 0-7 on the season after taking three defeats last week. North Haven lost to Xavier, Branford, and Guilford in last week’s action.
On Feb. 22, North Haven took a 59-23 road loss against Xavier. Junior Chris Hager scored seven points for North Haven in the game. Senior JJ Mazzaro had five points on the night.
Two days later, North Haven faced Branford on the road and lost the contest by a 67-47 score. Freshman Adam Pandolfi had 11 points for North Haven. Junior Ryan Balzano scored eight points, freshman Max Cargan scored seven points, Mazzaro and Hager had six points apiece, and junior Ty Rooney scored five points in the game.
Then on Feb. 26, North Haven took a 66-38 defeat against Guilford in a home game. Pandolfi scored nine points, while Hager, Rooney, and Mazzaro had six points apiece for North Haven.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The North Haven boys’ ice hockey squad was scheduled to play two games last week, but saw both contests postponed after the team was forced to go into quarantine due to potential exposure to COVID-19.
North Haven’s scheduled Feb. 24 game against Amity was postponed, as was its game versus North Branford that was slated to be played on Feb. 27. Furthermore, North Haven’s March 3 game versus Sheehan and its March 7 matchup against Guilford have been both canceled. North Haven has a record of 4-1 on the year.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Amity-North Haven- Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team played three games last week and came away with two wins and a tie to put its record at 3-1-1 for the season.
On Feb. 24, A-NH-C earned a 1-1 tie with Law/Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran/Weston-Pomperaug in a home game at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. The Blades trailed 1-0 in the third period when Caroline Cadelina netted the game-tying goal to help her squad get the 1-1 draw. Goalie Ginny Currello made 39 saves in net for A-NH-C.
Three days later, the Blades were the road team when they faced Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall-O’Brien Tech at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. A-NH-C prevailed by the final score of 3-2 in the matchup on Feb. 27.
North Haven senior Kelsey McCarthy posted a goal and an assist to help the Blades get the victory. McCarthy had the assist when junior Avery DePodesta scored a goal for A-NH-C during the second period. With the game tied up in the third, McCarthy gave the Blades the lead for good when scored from DePodesta and Cadelina to make it 3-2.
Cadelina also had an assist when junior Mia Dow scored from A-NH-C in the second stanza. Junior goalie Jade Krukar made 19 saves for the Blades in the game.
Then on Feb. 28, the Blades claimed a 5-2 victory over Hand-Coginchaug-Valley-Old Lyme in a road game at Northford Ice Pavilion. McCarthy had an assist for the Blades in the win. DePodesta scored two goals, Cadelina had a goal with an assist, while Dow and freshman Abby Fitol also scored goals. Senior Olivea Kosh handed out two assists.
