Morgan’s Hoops Squads Stay on the Winning Track

Boys’ Basketball

The Morgan boys’ basketball team ran its record to 6-0 on the season after recording two more victories last week. The Huskies started off the week by earning a win versus Haddam-Killingworth and then defeated Old Saybrook a few days later.

On Feb. 22, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth and prevailed over the Cougars by a 69-54 final. The Huskies were down 29-27 at halftime, but outscored H-K 22-8 during the third quarter to take a 51-36 advantage into the fourth. Morgan then held off H-K the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Senior Zach Johnson turned in a huge performance by pouring home 29 points for Morgan in the win. Senior Rob Zirlis scored 10 points, senior Jason Cohen had nine points, junior Drew Nye had seven points, and junior Alex Fratamico added six points for the Huskies.

Then on Feb. 25, Morgan claimed a 74-29 victory against Old Saybrook in a road game. The Huskies jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and increased the lead to 39-15 by halftime. Morgan went on to win both the third (19-7) and fourth (16-7) quarters to pull away.

Johnson and Cohen both scored 12 points for Morgan on the night. Zirlis and Nye scored 10 points apiece, junior Connor Duffy had eight points, and senior Cameron Carlson scored six points.

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team was victorious in both of last week’s contests and is now sporting a record of 5-1 on the season. The Huskies notched wins over Haddam-Killingworth and Old Saybrook in their last two games.

Morgan kicked off its week by claiming a 48-21 win against H-K in a road game on Feb. 22.

Three days later, the Huskies hosted Old Saybrook and won the matchup by a 60-28 score. Senior Catie Donadio scored 22 points for Morgan in the victory. Sophomore Caeley Ayer scored 14 points, while senior Alex Kelly had 10 points for the Huskies. Sophomore Katie Martin scored five points in the win.

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray gymnastics team competed against Old Lyme for an away meet on Feb. 27. The squad claimed a 134.30-105.3 victory versus Old Lyme at ABC Gymnastics to put its record at 4-0 on the year.
