Hand Boys’ Hockey Returns with a Win, Goes Back into Quarantine; Boys’ Basketball Also Sees Season Put on Pause


Boys’ Ice Hockey

After spending a couple of weeks in quarantine, the Hand boys’ hockey team returned to the ice when the Tigers faced Hamden on Feb. 28. Hand claimed a 3-2 win against the Green Dragons at Lou Astorino Ice Arena to improve to 2-1 on the year. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they were forced to go back into quarantine the following day as a result of another potential exposure to COVID-19.

Prior to playing Hamden, Hand had seen several games postponed due to a team quarantine. Looking ahead, the Tigers’ scheduled March 5 game against Branford was recently postponed after Branford entered quarantine as a result of potential COVID exposure. Now, Hand’s game versus Amity that had been slated for March 6 is also postponed.

In last week’s win versus Hamden, seniors John Gagliardi, Logan Massey, and Ethan Massey each scored a goal to help the Tigers win the game. Senior goalie Eric Dillner recorded 20 saves in net for Hand.

Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball squad saw the three games on last week’s schedule get postponed due to a team quarantine as a result of potential exposure to COVID-19. The Tigers’ scheduled Feb. 22 game against Hamden, Feb. 24 matchup with Xavier, and Feb. 26 contest against Sheehan were all postponed, as was the team’s games versus Cheshire and North Branford that were scheduled to take place on March 2 and 3, respectively.

The next game on Hand’s schedule is a matchup at Cheshire on Sunday, March 7. The Tigers have a record of 2-2 on the season.

Girls’ Basketball

The Hand girls’ basketball team claimed victory in two of its three games last week to raise its record to 5-1 on the season. The Tigers earned wins over Hamden and Mercy before taking a defeat to Sheehan last week.

Hand kicked off its week by earning a 54-28 victory at Hamden on Feb. 22. Junior Sophia Coppola scored 14 points for the Tigers. Junior Brooke Salutari and sophomore Coco Rourke both scored 11 points in the win. Senior Hadley Houghton scored nine points, and sophomore Natalie Lucas added five points.

Two days later, Hand played a road game versus Mercy and prevailed 35-23. Senior Maddie Thomas netted 11 points, Salutari scored 10 points, and Coppola had six points for Hand.

In its last game of the week, Hand took a 49-38 home loss to Sheehan on Feb. 26. Coppola scored 11 points, Salutari had eight points, Lucas scored seven points, and Houghton added five points.

Gymnastics

The Hand gymnastics team eked out a 122.5-122.25 victory versus Mercy at ABC Gymnastics on Feb. 26. It was the first dual-meet of the season for the Tigers, who are off to a 1-0 start to the year.

Freshman Hadley Reiss finished in a tie for first place on the floor routine with a score of 8.5 for the Tigers. Reiss also finished tied for second on vault with an 8.1. Senior Kayla Cataldo tied for third place on vault by scoring a 7.9.

Junior Paige Dean took second place on floor with a score of 8.4 for Hand. Sophomore Morgan McMahon posted a score of 8.2 to take third place.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Hand boys’ swimming and diving team competed against Amity in a virtual meet last week. The Tigers took a 92-85 loss to the Spartans after turning in their performances at the Madison Racquet & Swim Club on Feb. 22.

Girls’ Fencing

The Hand girls’ fencing team saw its varsity squad notch a 20-7 victory over North Haven in a home match on Feb. 25.

The Tigers’ épée team prevailed by a 9-0 score in the contest. Senior captain Sophia Glassman won all of her bouts to remain undefeated. Junior Natasha McCarthy also swept her bouts and has only taken one loss on the year.

Hand’s sabre team claimed its first victory of the season by defeating North Haven 6-3. Senior captain Hope Blundon, senior Megan Kelly, and junior Brigid O’Keefe each had two wins for the Tigers.

The foil team improved to 4-0 on the year by earning a 5-4 win versus North Haven. Senior captain Cameryn Brown kept her perfect record alive, winning each of her three bouts to help the Tigers prevail.

The Hand girls’ JV and novice fencing team had its lone meet of the season on Feb. 22 and responded with a 15-12 victory versus Morgan. The épée team won 6-3 behind the performances of freshmen Arianna Takyar, Ariadne Morada, and Norah Stotz. The sabre team lost 6-3, but saw strong showings from freshmen Anna Ferrucci and Lily Paine. The foil team won a 6-3 decision in a contest that saw novice fencer Quinn O’Halloran earn her first career victory.

Boys’ Fencing

The Hand boys’ fencing program’s varsity team hosted North Haven on Feb. 25 and claimed a 26-1 victory in the contest. The Tigers’ épée, foil, and sabre teams all won their respective matchups handily to help Hand get the convincing win.

The Hand boys’ JV and novice fencing teams competed in their only meet of the season last week and came away with a 14-13 victory against Morgan on Feb. 22. The épée team won by a 5-4 score behind an excellent performance from senior captain Sina Takyar. The foil team earned a 6-3 victory, while the sabre squad took a 6-3 loss.
