Valley Girls’ Hoops Beats H-K, Loses to Morgan; Girls’ Hockey Notches a Victory

Girls’ Basketball

The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team earned a win versus Haddam-Killingworth and then took a loss against Morgan in its two matchups last week. With these results, the Warriors now stand with an overall record of 2-2 for the 2021 campaign.

Valley started off its week by hosting Haddam-Killingworth on Feb. 16. The Warriors notched a 53-33 victory over the Cougars to get their second win of the year.

Sophomore Abby Bradbury scored 16 points in the victory, while senior Alena Crosby had 15 points for the Warriors. Sophomore Lily Grow added eight points, and senior Libby Cap had five points in the winning effort. Bradbury also had nine rebounds with three assists and six steals on the night. Grow had four blocks and six boards, Cap had five rebounds with two steals, and sophomore Elizabeth Allen collected six rebounds for Valley. Junior Bitzy Klomp had four steals, while Crosby, Cap, and senior Addison Marchese had two steals apiece.

Then on Feb. 20, Valley Regional played a home game against rival Morgan. Valley took a 56-43 defeat against the Huskies to put their record at 2-2. Bradbury scored 14 points for the Warriors in the game. Marchese had seven points, and Cap scored five points. Cap also had eight rebounds in the game. Grow posted two blocks, while Crosby and Bradbury each had four assists with two steals.

Gymnastics

The Valley Regional gymnastics team competed against the Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray co-op squad at Flip-Flop Gymnastics in its first three meets of the season. The Warriors took a 123.30-119.85 defeat on Feb. 13, dropped a 128.75-123.30 decision on Feb. 15, and lost by a 124.80-118.50 score on Feb. 20.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley-Old Lyme (H-C-V-OL) girls’ ice hockey team lost two of its three games last week and is now 2-2 on the year.

H-C-V-OL squared off against Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton-Shelton-New Milford for a road game at the Sports Center of Connecticut on Feb. 17. H-C-V-OL won the game by a 3-0 score for its second victory of the season.

On Feb. 20, H-C-V-OL took a 7-0 loss to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at Bennett Rink. The next day, the team lost to Guilford by an 8-1 score at Northford Ice Pavilion.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team moved to 0-3 on the season after taking two defeats last week. The team features athletes from several local high schools, including Valley Regional.

On Feb. 15, East Haven dropped a 4-2 decision to Amity at Bennett Rink. Duncan Rider, a junior at Valley, scored the Yellowjackets’ first goal of the game on assists from senior David Amatruda and senior Rocco Plano. Senior Chad Feola netted the team’s second goal of the game on an assist by Valley sophomore Dylan Ingram. Junior goalie Ethan Roach made 37 saves in net for East Haven.

On Feb. 20, the Yellowjackets faced Lyman Hall and Northford Ice Pavilion and lost the game by a 4-1 score.
