Old Saybrook Girls’ Hoops 2-0 to Start the Year; Boys Earn Win Versus Westbrook

Girls’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook girls’ basketball team played two games during the first week of its season last week. The Rams earned a victory versus Portland and then prevailed against Westbrook to open the year with a record of 2-0.

Old Saybrook kicked off its season by claiming a 47-43 win over Portland in a home game on Feb. 16. The Rams rallied for the victory by outscoring Portland 23-12 during the fourth quarter to pull off the four-point win.

Senior Priscilla Gumkowski scored 11 points to help Old Saybrook claim victory versus the Highlanders. Junior Cassie Johnson scored nine points, while senior Taylor Stone and junior Ella Hagelston netted eight points apiece for the Rams. Junior Beldina Feratovic scored six points, and fellow junior Lily Cody added five points in the win.

On Feb. 19, the Rams were on the road to face rival Westbrook. Old Saybrook notched a 53-28 win against the Knights for win No. 2 on the young campaign. Cody scored 14 points for Old Saybrook in the game. Stone had 10 points, Johnson scored nine points, Feratovic chipped in with eight points, and Gumkowski had seven points.

Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team tipped off its 2021 season by playing two games last week. The Rams took a loss to Portland before getting a win versus Westbrook for a 1-1 start to the campaign.

Old Saybrook took a 59-24 road loss to Portland in its season opener on Feb. 16. Then on Feb. 20, the Rams hosted Westbrook for their home opener and defeated the Knights by a 54-48 score.

Old Saybrook’s game against Westbrook was a close contest that saw the Rams take a 38-36 lead into the fourth quarter and then outscore the Knights by a 16-12 margin in the fourth to come away with the victory. Sophomore Ryan Stratton scored 16 points for the Rams in the win. Junior captain Riley Lawson had 11 points, while senior captain Ben Yost and sophomore Aaron Tolve netted eight points apiece. Senior Peter Waida scored six points, and freshman Auggie Albert had five points for Head Coach Chris Perras’s club.
