Several Tigers' Teams Prevail During First Week of the Season


Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball team split a pair of games in its first two regular-season contests of the year. The Tigers played two close games during the opening week of the season, taking a three-point loss to Lyman Hall and notching a one-point win versus Guilford.

Hand began its campaign by hosting Lyman Hall on Feb. 10 and lost the game by a 42-39 score. Junior Tyler Favre scored 12 points for the Tigers.

On Feb. 12, Hand earned its first win of the year by claiming a 43-42 home victory versus Guilford. Favre had 14 points for Hand in the win.

Girls' Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley-Old Lyme girls' ice hockey team was on the road to face the Hamden co-op for its season opener last week. The Tigers claimed a 4-2 victory over Hamden-Wilbur-Cross-Lyman Hall-O'Brien Tech at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Feb. 10.

Girls’ Fencing

The Hand girls’ fencing squad claimed victories against Old Lyme and North Branford during the opening week of its season.

On Feb. 10, the Tigers’ foil team earned a 7-2 win at Old Lyme. Senior captain Cameryn Brown went undefeated on the day to lift Hand to the victory. Senior Alexa Betts and junior Angela Zhang had the other two wins for the foil squad.

The Tigers’ épée team also defeated Old Lyme by a 7-2 score. Senior captain Sophie Glassman went undefeated for Hand in the match, while junior Natasha McCarthy provided two wins.

Two days later, the Tigers notched a 9-0 victory against North Branford in a foil match at Daniel Hand High School. Brown won all three of her bouts to lead Hand to the sweep. Betts, Zhang, senior Brenna McCallum, and junior Quinn O’Halloran each won all of their bouts.

Boys’ Fencing

The Hand boys’ fencing team opened its season by posting wins over Old Lyme and North Branford during the first week of action.

Hand started the season with a matchup at Old Lyme on Feb. 10. The Tigers’ foil team earned a 6-3 victory over Old Lyle, led by senior captain Luke Newton, who went undefeated on the day. Junior Nolan Sherry and sophomore Fede Barrera also had wins to contribute to the victory.

In the épée contest, junior Brian Girardi went undefeated for the Tigers, guiding the team to a 6-3 win. Senior Quinn Johnson recorded two victories, and senior Vincent Calia-Bogan pitched in the final win for the team on the day.

On Feb. 12, Hand hosted North Branford for a foil meet and prevailed by a 5-4 score. Barrera solidified the victory for the Tigers when he won the ninth bout of the day to break a 4-4 tie.
