Morgan Girls’ Hoops Earns Split in First Week


The Morgan girls’ basketball team played a pair of contests to open the 2021 campaign and came away with a win and a loss on the slate. The Huskies to a 38-37 road loss against East Hampton and then picked up a 53-44 home win over Cromwell.

On Feb. 10, the Huskies hosted East Hampton and took a 38-37 defeat in overtime against the Bellringers.

Morgan held a slight edge with a 9-8 first quarter, but East Hampton took an 18-14 lead at halftime. The Huskies fought back to a dead heat with the Bellringers at 22-22 after three, and both teams scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. East Hampton won the extra frame 6-5 to take the victory.

Senior Alex Kelly led the Huskies in scoring with 10 points and also hauled in 11 rebounds. Senior captain Catie Donadio scored nine points to go along with 11 boards, seven assists, and four steals. Sophomore Caeley Ayer added seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Sophomore Katie Martin supplied nine points, nine boards, an assist, and a steal.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Cromwell and grabbed a bounce-back 53-44 win. It was another tight affair with the score knotted at 21-21 after the first half. Morgan pulled ahead by a single tally through the third quarter at 35-34, but the game opened up in the fourth with the Huskies winning the frame 18-10 en route to the 53-44 final.

Donadio had a 20-point scoring effort to go with seven boards, four assists, and five steals. Kelly provided 12 points, and 16 rebounds. Martin and freshman Ava Johnson scored seven points each. Ayer added six points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
