Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball squad tipped off the 2021 season by winning both of its games during the first week of the campaign. North Haven, which is entering its second season with Head Coach Tom Blake, notched victories versus East Haven and Cheshire to jump out to a 2-0 start to the year.

North Haven started off its season by claiming a 45-27 win over East Haven in a home game on Feb. 10. The two sides were locked in an 11-11 tie at halftime before North Haven outscored the Yellowjackets 14-11 in the third quarter to take a three-point lead into the fourth. Coach Blake’s squad then won the fourth quarter by a 20-5 differential to pull away for the win.

Sophomore Emma Liedke scored 17 points for North Haven in the victory. Senior Sarah Puzone had nine points, while fellow senior Carly Fresher netted eight points.

Then on Feb. 12, North Haven squared off with Cheshire on the road and prevailed by the score of 45-15. North Haven took control of the game early by outscoring the Rams 10-2 in the first quarter and 16-2 in the second for a 26-4 halftime advantage. North Haven went on to win both the third (10-5) and fourth (9-6) quarters to get the 30-point victory.

Puzone scored 13 points to go with five rebounds and three steals for North Haven. Senior Olivia Stefanik scored nine points and had two blocks, while sophomore Olivia Johnson also scored nine points. Fresher had a big defensive game by snagging six steals in the lopsided win.
