12/27/2020 11:00 PMThere were plenty of success stories for Old Saybrook athletics in 2020. The girls’ indoor track squad claimed its fourth-consecutive Shoreline title during the winter, while the field hockey and boys’ soccer teams had impressive fall campaigns. Here’s a review of the highlights from the year.
Winter
The Old Saybrook girls’ indoor track team enjoyed a memorable season that featured its fourth-straight Shoreline Conference title.
Senior captain Grace Hannratty concluded her career with the team by competing in the 1,000-meter run at the New England Championship, finishing in sixth place. Hanratty earned her spot at New Englands with a second-place finish in the 1,000 at the State Open. Hanratty also claimed first place in the 1,000 at the Class S State Championship.
At Shorelines, Hanratty took first place in 600. In the 4x400 relay Hanratty, Anna Brodeur, Avery Reuckert, and Emily Stratton came in first place. Hanratty, Brodeur, Maddie Beaudoin, and Autumn Szucs earned first place in the 1,600 sprint medley relay.
Senior captain Cate Coppes took first in the pole vault, while Stratton finished first in the 1,000. Old Saybrook’s 4x800 relay of Stratton, Libby Stuart, Julia Sultini, Caitlin Wiley also took first place.
After Shorelines, the Rams came in second place at states. In addition to Hanratty’s first-place finish in the 1,000, Coppes grabbed the gold in the pole vault.
The Rams’ boys’ indoor track team claimed second place at the Shoreline Conference Championship and finished fourth at the Class S State Championship.
Jack Colella took first place in the 300, while Cooper Luciani finished first in the 600 at Shorelines. Jon Barnes earned first place in the high jump, and Cody DeAngelo claimed first place in the pole vault. The Rams’ 4x800 relay of Luke Hanratty, Luciani, Jacob Schneider, and Jack Wiley also took first.
At the states, Luciani finished first in the 600, and DeAngelo earned first place in the pole vault.
The Old Saybrook girls’ basketball team posted a record of 2-18 record. The Rams were led by senior captains Taylor Cote and Wendy Bowden. Freshman Beldina Feratovic earned All-Shoreline Conference Honorable Mention for Head Coach Steve Woods’s squad.
The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team finished with a mark of 2-18. The Rams’ senior captains were Davis Brown and Mike Almada, both of whom received All-Shoreline Conference Honorable Mention.
Fall
After an extended preseason of conditioning, Old Saybrook fall sports began in October. Teams were slated to play half of typical season’s schedule with no state tournaments, but all teams could potentially participate in conference tournaments. The Rams saw impressive runs by the boys’ soccer and field hockey squads, while the girls’ soccer team showed marked improvement.
The Old Saybrook field hockey team had an overall record of 7-3-1 and played in the Shoreline Conference Tournament final. The Rams took a 2-0 loss against North Branford in the final.
Head Coach Nancy Gatta’s squad was led senior captains Taylor Stone and Kayla Holt. Stone made the All-Shoreline Conference First Team, earned Shoreline Conference Player of the Year honors, and was named to the All-State Second Team. Holt earned All-Shoreline First Team recognition and All-State Honorable Mention.
Grace Adams garnered All-Shoreline Conference Second Team accolades. Libby Stuart and MacKenna Cooke were presented with All-Shoreline Conference First Team and Second Team recognition, respectively. Earning All-Shoreline Honorable Mention for Old Saybrook was Kate Heiden.
With no State Tournament, the Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team was unable to defend its Class S title. The Rams still turned in a strong showing in Steve Waters’s first year as head coach.
Old Saybrook’s overall record was 8-3. The Rams played two playoff contests in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, defeating Hale-Ray 1-0 in the quarterfinals and then taking a 2-1 overtime loss versus East Hampton in the semis.
Carter Gibson earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team recognition and All-State Honorable Mention. Matt Rothman also received All-Shoreline First Team honors, as well as All-State Honorable Mention. Nick Scalzo was also recognized with All-Shoreline First Team honors.
Gannon Effinger and Nick Rothman made the All-Shoreline Conference Second Team. Cameron D’Angelo received All-Shoreline Honorable Mention.
The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer squad turned in a record of 4-5-2, including its first postseason win in four years. The Rams scored a 1-0 victory over North Branford in the opening round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament before losing in the next round.
Head Coach Paige Marinelli’s squad was led by senior captains Bridget Kawecki, Emily Stratton, and Gilly Hartt. Kawecki earned All-Shoreline Conference Second Team recognition, and Emily Stratton was awarded All-Shoreline Conference Honorable Mention. Lily Cody earned All-Shoreline First Team accolades. Anna Brodeur received All-Shoreline Honorable Mention.
The Old Saybrook boys’ cross country team claimed fifth place at Shoreline Conference Championship meet. Jacob Schneider took eighth place, while Jack Wiley finished in 12th place.
The Rams’ girls’ cross country squad saw Caitlyn Wiley claim fourth place, Catherine Minegar earn fifth place, and Carlina Castro take ninth place at Shoreline Conference Championship meet.
