The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ soccer squad advanced to the Shoreline Conference Tournament final after winning its first two games of the tournament last week. H-K notched wins versus Cromwell and East Hampton to reach the Shoreline final for the second-straight year, while improving to 9-2-1 overall.
The 3rd-seeded Cougars kicked off the Shoreline tourney by posting a 6-1 home victory against No. 6 seed Cromwell on Nov. 10. H-K held a 4-1 lead at halftime and then scored two more goals during the second stanza to solidify the win.
Sophomore Maggie Singer scored a goal just 1:47 into the game to give H-K a 1-0 lead. After Cromwell tied the game, the Cougars scored the last three goals of the half. A little more than four minutes after Cromwell’s goal, junior Hadley Commerford scored on an assist from senior Kaitlyn Parri to put H-K up 2-1. With 18:09 remaining in the half, sophomore Caroline Conte drew a penalty kick and converted it to make it 3-1. With 9:21 to play, sophomore Julia Favalora scored from Singer to give the Cougars a three-goal lead at the break.
Singer made it 5-1 when she scored her second goal on an assist by senior Morgan Madore at the 1:33 mark of the second half. With 22:12 remaining in the game, Commerford netted her second score on a helper from Madore to finish off the 6-1 victory.
Junior goalie Brianna Nugent made five saves in net for H-K.
Then on Nov. 13, H-K played a semifinal game at No. 2 seed East Hampton and defeated the Bellringers by the final score of 2-0. Senior Kedarjah Lewis put H-K up 1-0 when scored on an assist from Madore with just 26 seconds left in the first half. With 37:16 remaining in the game, Lewis netted an unassisted goal to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Nugent stopped three shots in goal to get the shutout and help H-K get back to the Shoreline final. H-K faced No. 1 seed Old Lyme for the conference title at Old Lyme High School on Nov. 16 (after press time).
Boys’ Soccer
The H-K boys’ soccer team made it to the Shoreline Conference Tournament championship game by winning its first two matchups of the draw. The Cougars posted wins over Old Lyme and Portland to advance to the Shoreline final and improve to 7-3-2 on the year.
No. 6 seed H-K opened up the Shoreline Conference tourney by claiming a 3-1 road victory versus 3rd-seeded Old Lyme on Nov. 11. Senior captain Colby Whitehead scored two goals, while junior captain Ben Williams tallied a goal and an assist for the Cougars. Sophomore Tyler Perry also had an assist.
Senior John Kowal scored two goals in the victory with Whitehead and senior Tim Carter each netting one goal apiece. Freshman Cole Merriam had an assist for H-K, as did along with Whitehead and Williams. Senior goalkeeper Cal Braren was in net for both victories for the Cougars, who played at No. 4 seed East Hampton in the Shoreline final on Nov. 16 (after press time).
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ swimming and diving squad completed a 5-0 season by earning a 100-70 victory versus Waterford in a virtual meet on Nov. 5.
Senior captain Nina Lamb broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke by swimming a time of 1:10.69 for H-K at the meet. Lamb had initially set the school record, which had stood since 1995, by recording a time of 1:11.11 at last year’s Class S State Qualifying meet.
Senior captain Addy Hawkins posted personal-best times in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke for H-K in its season finale. Other personal-best swims came from senior Hayley Lawrence in both the 100 butterfly and her butterfly split in the 200 medley relay, junior Nikki Ackerman in the 100 freestyle and the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay, sophomore Aleia Goodison in the 500 freestyle, and freshman Peyton Tyler in the backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay.
The Cougars also received strong swims from Jackie Flaherty, Kristen Thebeau, Julia Dattilo, Aleysha Brawley, and Johanna Housk at the meet. Erin Marica won the 200 and 500 freestyle events, while Wesley Baucom posted a solid freestyle split in the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay.
