Branford Field Hockey, Volleyball Lose in SCC Semis


Field Hockey

The Branford field hockey team took on Cheshire in the semifinals of the SCC Division A Tournament on Nov. 9. The 4th-seeded Hornets lost a 3-1 decision against the top-seeded Rams at Cheshire High School.

Branford finished the year with an overall record of 6-6.

Freshman Raiyn Fries scored the Hornets’ lone goal of the game when they faced Cheshire in SCCs. Sophomore Scout Engstrom had the assist on the goal.

Junior goalie Nina Shamas made 12 saves in net for Branford. Head Coach Pete Frye said the Hornets received excellent performances from seniors Alisa Gueco and Andrea Amarante, juniors Lenora Longway and Julia McHenry, sophomores Lauren Kendrick, Aryana Wilson, Gianna Bozzi, and freshman Ellie Wieland and Iva Sekerovic in the game.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Hornets’ girls’ volleyball squad won its opening contest in the SCC Division C Tournament before taking a loss in the semifinal round last week. Branford went 4-10 overall on the season.

No. 5 seed Branford started off its SCC draw by claiming a 3-1 victory at No. 4 West Haven in a first-round contest on Nov. 9. Two days later, the Hornets took a 3-0 defeat at No. 1 seed Guilford in a semifinal matchup.
