The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team was well-represented at the Southern Connecticut Conference Division I Virtual Championship that took place from Oct. 26 to Nov. 10.

This year, due to restrictions in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCC Championship did not take place as it typically would with all the teams competing at one site. Instead, the 17 teams in the SCC competed at their respective home pools, after which the performances in every event were ranked in order score out the team standings for Division I and Division II, as well as the SCC overall. Hand finished in eighth place with 604 points scored for the Division II meet and finished ninth in the SCC with 385 points scored for those standings.

Senior Ava Keane swam a time of 1:01.12 in the 100 backstroke to take third place for both the SCC Division I Championship and the SCC Championship for the Tigers. Keane also posted a time of 1:57.28 in the 200 freestyle to finish fifth in the division and sixth for the conference.

Junior Abbigail Chemacki finished with a time of 5:31.69 in the 500 freestyle to finish eighth for the division and ninth in the SCC overall. Senior Emma Ruffo placed ninth in the division and 10th for the conference by swimming a time of 5:32.02 in the 500 free.

Senior Ava Dougherty finished with a time of 1:17.94 in the 100 breaststroke to take 11th place in the division and 20th in the conference. Fellow senior Kacie Wines went a time of 26.27 in the 50 freestyle to finish 12th in the division and 15th in the SCC outright. Wines also posted a mark of 1:05.82 in the 100 butterfly to take 13th in the division and 16th in the conference.

Hand also saw two relays compete at the SCC meet. The Tigers’ 400 freestyle relay of sophomore Julia Urbowicz, Wines, Ruffo, and Keane finished with a time of 3:55.09 to take fifth place in both the divisional and conference competitions. The 200 medley relay of senior Alessandra Betts, Dougherty, senior Sophia Cadematori, and freshman Norah Stotz recorded a time of 2:06.25 to finish eighth in the division and 14th in the conference.
