The Morgan boys soccer squad had to wrap up its season early due to COVID-19 concerns. Morgan shut down in-person learning until Nov. 16, which will be after the completion of the Shoreline Conference Tournament. As a result, the Huskies played just a single home game, which ultimately ended up being their season finale. Morgan claimed a 3-0 win over East Hampton at the Indian River Complex to end the year with a final record of 8-2.
On Nov. 3, the Huskies and Bellringers played to an early stalemate with neither team scoring in the first half. In the second half, Sean Cafferty finally broke through the East Hampton defense in the 53rd minute to hit a one-time shot between two defenders, past the goalie, and into the back of the net.
Cafferty continued to produce and ultimately earned a hat trick in the game. Both of his other two goals came on the left side of the field, where he beat his defenders and crushed the ball into the upper corner of the net. Cafferty was assisted on his shots by Manny Romero, Sebby Kadlof, and Evan Baptista.
Morgan’s final scheduled game of the season would’ve been Nov. 5, but school was canceled early that morning. As a result, Morgan will not get the chance to defend its share of last season’s Shoreline Conference Tournament title.
Girls’ Soccer
The Huskies had three games on the slate this week, but after two contests, the remainder of the 2020 campaign was canceled. Morgan picked up a win and a loss in its contest to finish out the year with a record of 5-2-3.
On Nov. 3, Morgan hosted East Hampton at the Indian River Complex and took a 2-0 defeat against the Bellringers. East Hampton scored a goal in the first half and another in the second half, while the Huskies had difficulty getting on the board. Morgan managed seven shots, but East Hampton’s keeper played it tough. Emma Lindsay had a pair of saves in the loss.
Two days later, Morgan claimed a 3-0 road victory over Coginchaug. The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Caeley Ayer on a Carley Schmidt assist in the 27th minute. The first half ended with Morgan up 1-0. Ayer added another goal in the second half at the 49-minute mark off an assist from Genna Rauccio. Morgan’s final goal of the game came in the 60th minute from Rauccio off an assist from Schmidt.
The Huskies took 10 shots and Lindsay made seven saves in the victory.
Field Hockey
The Huskies played just a single game before the rest of the season slate was canceled. On Nov. 3, Morgan picked up a 1-0 win in overtime on the road versus Valley Regional for a final record of 4-5 on the year.
The Huskies earned their win thanks to a goal from Nori Lopez off an assist from Alex Wolf. Lopez scored the only goal of the game with just 53 seconds left in overtime. Huskies’ goalie Abby Gordon made three saves.
Girls’ Volleyball
Morgan played just a single game last week to close out the season. The Huskies lost a 3-1 home match against Haddam-Killingworth and finished the year with a final record of 2-7.
Morgan lost the first set against the Cougars 25-10 but took the second set by a score of 25-22. H-K won the next two sets to take the 3-1 win.
Kristina Seeger tallied four kills, six blocks, and two receptions in the loss. Alexandra Kelly provided three kills, 10 blocks, two digs, and two receptions, while Alexandra Duval notched 19 receptions and nine digs. Rachael Pellegrini supplied four assists, a kill, and an ace, while Colleen Edwards had two kills, one ace, one block, and a dig. Francesca Tino dug out eight balls and had 16 receptions, while Madeline Dunham had five digs and eight receptions. Kiley Geoghegan provided three digs and 12 receptions. Tatum Petrelis supplied 10 receptions. Hailey Baldwin had 12 serves and two receptions.
Football
The Huskies played a home contest against Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton at Peters Complex this week. Morgan claimed a 35-34 victory in the contest. The win improved the Huskies record to 3-0 to close out the year.
