Easties Run at SCC Meet; Girls’ Volleyball Wins Regular-Season Finale

Girls’ Cross Country

The East Haven girls’ cross country team was represented by four athletes when the Southern Connecticut Conference hosted its Division A Championship at East Shore Park last week.

The SCC held four divisional meets for its girls’ cross country teams on Nov. 4. In addition to crowning divisional winners, the SCC also merged the performances from those meets to tabulate the team standings for the SCC Championship.

Junior Juliana Espinoza delivered the best showing for the East Haven girls by completing the 5K in 26 minutes and 7 seconds, finishing in 20th place for the SCC Division A Championship and came in 88th place for the SCC Championship.

Senior Erin Curran timed in with a mark of 28:19 for the Yellowjackets. Curran took 23rd place in the division and finished 116th for the overall SCC standings.

Senior Nicole Pendziwater finished 24th for the divisional meet and 121st in the conference with her time of 28:38. Fellow senior Kisha Francois posted a time of 31:05 to finish in 29th place in the division and 132nd in the SCC outright.

Boys’ Cross Country

The East Haven boys’ cross country squad saw four runners hit the trails to compete at the SCC’s postseason competition at East Shore Park. On Nov. 4, the conference held four divisional meets that additionally generated the team standings for the SCC Championship.

Senior Ian Reynolds turned in East Haven’s top performance by running a time of 19 minutes and 53 seconds for the 5K race. Reynolds finished in 21st place for the Division A Championship and 82nd in the SCC Championship by virtue of his time.

Senior Kevin Francois crossed the finish line with a time of 22:05 for the Yellowjackets. Francois finished 24th in the division and 128th in the conference.

Junior Frank Papa also competed for East Haven at the SCC meet. Papa ran a time of 23:28 to take 27th place in Division A and 142nd for the SCC overall.

Girls’ Volleyball

The East Haven girls’ volleyball squad finished its regular season at 6-6 after splitting a pair of matches last week.

East Haven started off its week by taking a 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-19) home loss to Guilford on Nov. 2. Sophomore Alice Stettinger had four kills, while senior Carly Cordova posted seven kills with three digs for the Yellowjackets.

On Nov. 7, the Yellowjackets hosted North Haven and prevailed by the final score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15). Junior Magdalena Barthel had 10 kills, Cordova contributed seven kills and six aces, and senior libero Megan Gaudioso had 14 digs.

East Haven is the No. 2 seed in the SCC Division C Tournament. The Yellowjackets were slated to play No. 3 Daniel Hand in a semifinal match on Nov. 11 (after press time) and would move on to the championship on Friday, Nov. 13 with a win.

Boys’ Soccer

The East Haven boys’ soccer team hosted Guilford for its last game of the regular season on Nov. 3. The Yellowjackets took a 6-1 loss to Guilford to finish with a record of 4-5 in regular-season play.

Sophomore Christofher Torres scored the Easties’ goal against Guilford. Senior Luis Agudelo had the assist.

East Haven was slated to face Guilford again in the semifinals of the SCC Tournament this week. The 3rd-seeded Yellowjackets had a game against No. 2 Guilford in the semis on Nov. 10 (after press time). With a win, East Haven would advance to face top-seeded Hand in the final on Thursday, Nov. 12.
