11/04/2020 11:00 PMBailey Goss has quickly developed a reputation as one of the top goalkeepers in the Shoreline Conference. A junior at Morgan, Bailey is in his first season as the starting goalie for the Morgan boys’ soccer team. Bailey is seeing plenty of success in net due to his aggressive, yet savvy style of play.
“I like the physical aspect of soccer. It’s exciting,” says Bailey. “Being able to slide into people, jumping into them for catches, and being able to knock people down when they come in my box are some of my favorite things to do.”
Bailey has made a rapid rise up the ranks since he started playing soccer in 8th grade. Last year, Bailey served as Morgan’s backup goalie when the team claimed its third-straight Shoreline Conference title. Bailey saw some quality minutes in net during the season that have paid big-time dividends for him in 2020. After recording four shutouts last fall, Bailey has already posted six shutouts as a junior for the Huskies, who are sporting a record of 7-2.
“He is the final line of defense...He’s very calm,” Head Coach Ross Demay says of Bailey. “He’s been a huge part of the team this year and stepped up hugely, playing through some injuries for parts of the season. He never lets it prevent him from going out and giving all that he can.”
Even though he’s only been a goalie for a short time, Bailey has made some gigantic strides between the pipes during the past few years. Bailey spends a lot of time working on his netminding skills and gives credit to Coach Demay for helping him become the keeper that he is today.
“The relationship between me and my coach is very good,” Bailey says. “He’s taught me everything I know and made me the player I am now. He works and trains me hard, and I couldn’t thank him enough for it.”
Coach Demay says that Bailey has turned in several clutch performances in goal for Morgan this year. Demay has been pleased to see Bailey come up with some big stops late in games on several occasions.
“He has saved us quite a few times in games, keeping us within the game by his play and preventative style of goalkeeping,” says Demay. “His hard work in the offseason really shows this season, having [six] shutouts in [nine] games, which is [more than] last year in 20. In my eyes, he has become one of the best keepers in the Shoreline.”
Bailey is also a member of the Morgan baseball team, for which he plays shortstop, center field, and is a pitcher. No matter what sport he’s playing, Bailey enjoys working out to ensure that he’s in prime shape for when he steps into the arena.
“I want to continue to live by the motto ‘Send It’ and continue to work out for my sports,” Bailey says. “My personal accomplishments make me want to keep getting better, and it’s all my sports progress and goals I have set for the season. I plan to record eight shutouts for the season.”
Morgan is striving to win its fourth-straight Shoreline Conference title this fall. As he enters the home stretch of his first season as Morgan’s starting goalie, Bailey feels that the Huskies are in great shape to achieve the four-peat.
“My expectations are for us to go on and win Shorelines for the fourth year in a row,” says Bailey. “I want to carry our legacy over to next year when I’m a senior.”
