Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team had a couple of games last week and picked up wins in both contests. The victories improved the Huskies’ record to 7-2 as the end of the regular season looms.

On Oct. 29, Morgan hosted Cromwell at the Indian River Complex. The Huskies took on an undefeated Cromwell squad that has been stingy in terms of allowing goals this season. The Huskies took a conservative approach due to the weather, and it paid off resulting in a 1-0 victory for Morgan.

As the score indicated, the teams were evenly matched and the first half went by without a score.

In the second half, Cromwell’s best scoring chance came right off the opening kick. The ball grazed a Morgan defender, landing at the foot of a Cromwell attacker, who had an open shot from just inside the 18. Bailey Goss made a clean save on the shot. While the Panthers were pushed up, a long ball from Sebby Kadlof found the foot of Sean Cafferty, who flicked it over the defender twice before volleying the ball into the side netting. That proved the only score of the game. Goss made nine save in that contest.

Morgan outshot Cromwell 17-13.

On Oct. 31, the Huskies hosted another game at the Indian River Complex, this time against Coginchaug. Morgan was able to capitalize on the depleted Blue Devils and took a 7-0 victory in the match.

Coginchaug had a couple decent scoring chances in the first half—one of which went wide and the other Goss made an outstanding diving save on—the rest of the game was all Morgan. The first goal came off a corner kick from Matt Lopez which Cafferty headed in. A Coginchaug defender made a play to block it but was too far in the net as the ball crossed the line. Morgan’s second goal also came on a corner. Lopez got the ball to fellow sophomore Joe Morse who headed it in for his first goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Cafferty added to Morgan’s tally with a penalty kick goal. Before the end of the half, Kadlof found some open space, dribbled, and hit a knuckling shot right past Coginchaug’s keeper to make it 4-0

Normally with a lopsided score, Head Coach Ross Demay would take an opportunity to play some swing players who play both JV and varsity into the game, but rosters are limited due to COVID-19. In the second half, Max Skidmore scored on a one-time shot off a through-ball from Cafferty to make it 5-0. The next goal came from Cafferty to finish off his hat trick, on a long shot off Lopez’s third assist of the game. Matt Menacho scored Morgan’s final goal off an assist from Skidmore for the 7-0 final.

Goss was only called on for four saves in the game. Morgan tallied 29 shots while Coginchaug managed seven.

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer squad had just one game this week, and it resulted in a tie. The draw shifted the Huskies’ record to 4-1-3 on the season.

On Oct. 30, the Huskies hosted Cromwell at the Indian River Complex and the teams played to scoreless tie. Morgan tallied five shots on goal, while the Panthers had four shots. Emma Lindsay made four saves in net for the Huskies to help preserve the tie.

Field Hockey

The Morgan field hockey team played two games last week and split the pair. With these results, the Huskies’ record moved to 3-5 on the year.

On Oct. 27, Morgan headed to North Branford and lost a 4-0 road contest to the Thunderbirds. On Oct. 31, the Huskies hosted Valley Regional at the Indian River Complex and earned a 3-1 win over the Warriors.

Alex Wolf had a big game for the Huskies notching a hat trick in the contest. Nori Lopez added two assists as well. Abby Gordon made two saves for Morgan.

Girls’ Volleyball

Morgan had a slate of two games last week and earned a win and a loss in those contests. With these results, the Huskies record on the year moved to 2-6 on the season.

On Oct. 27, Morgan hosted Cromwell and claimed a 3-0 victory over the Panthers. The Huskies had a dominating 25-6 score in the first set, followed by wins of 25-14 and 25-16 in the next two sets for the sweep.

On Oct. 29, Morgan headed to East Hampton and took a 3-0 loss against the Bellringers. The set scores went in favor of East Hampton 25-12, 25-20, and 25-18.
