Hand Boys’ Cross Country Sweeps Tri-Meet; Field Hockey Tops Branford and Mercy

Boys’ Cross Country

The Hand boys’ cross country team earned two victories when it hosted a tri-meet at the Surf Club on Oct. 29. The Tigers posted wins over Guilford (24-35) and Lyman Hall (15-49) on its way to sweeping the meet.

Senior Dante Zucconi finished first with a time of 17 minutes and 25 seconds for the Tigers. Fellow senior Connor Parthasarthy came in second place by hitting the finish line with a time of 17:30. Junior Danny Hilmer finished sixth (17:41), sophomore Harrison Grenier took seventh (17:43), and junior Jack O’Keefe placed eighth (17:45). Junior Sam Stiewing finished in ninth place (17:54) for Hand, and senior Max Genther came in 11th place (18:04).

Girls’ Cross Country

The Hand girls’ cross country squad gained a split when it went up against Guilford and Lyman Hall last week. On Oct. 29, the Tigers hosted a tri-meet at the Surf Club and earned a 21-35 win over Lyman Hall, while taking a 24-36 loss versus Guilford.

Senior Anna Steffen took first place in the race by running a time of 18 minutes and 57 seconds for the Tigers, defeating the second-place finisher by nearly two minutes. Senior Morgan Combs finished in third place for Hand with a time of 20:57. Senior Keelin Virgulto finished 10th (22:29), junior Maya Sestan took 13th place (22:49), and freshman Tessa Burch placed 18th (23:50). Senior Anna Son came in 20th place (25:02), and freshman Alexandra Price finished in 25th (34:30) for the Tigers.

Field Hockey

The Hand field hockey team celebrated its seniors in style by posting two recent wins to improve to 6-2 on the year. The Tigers defeated Branford before earning a Senior Night triumph versus Mercy in last week’s matchups.

On Oct. 26, Hand defeated Branford by a 2-1 score in a road game. Senior Erin Patla scored the Tigers’ first goal on an assist by fellow senior Shea Docker. Patla then assisted on Docker’s goal to put the Tigers up 2-0. Junior goalie Megan Hart made 12 saves in the victory.

Two days later, Hand hosted Mercy and recorded a 4-0 victory on Senior Night. Senior Maddy Kilduff was in net for the Tigers and earned the shutout. Grace Hartmann scored the Tigers’ first goal on an assist from Patla, who wound up finishing with two goals and two assists on the night. Hand’s final goal of the game was scored by freshman Sydney Courtmanche.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Tigers’ girls’ volleyball team improved to 4-6 by winning both of its matches during the past week.

On Oct. 26, the Tigers took on East Haven and prevailed by a 3-2 final on the road. The victory avenged Hand’s 3-0 loss to East Haven from earlier in the season.

Three days later, Hand hosted Whitney Tech and claimed a 3-0 win.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hand boys’ soccer squad improved to 8-0 by winning both of last week’s matchups.

Hand claimed a 3-0 road victory against Cheshire on Oct. 27. The Tigers followed that up with a 4-1 win at Branford on Oct. 30.

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team earned a win and a tie last week to improve 4-2-2 on the season. Hand blanked Guilford before playing Branford to a draw in recent action.

On Oct. 27, the Tigers hosted SCC rival Guilford and won a 1-0 decision. Sophomore Lydia Doraz scored the lone goal of the game with eight minutes remaining to lift Hand to the victory. Junior goalie Brooke Salutari made 10 saves for Hand in the win.

Three days later, Hand hosted Branford and battled the Hornets to a 0-0 draw. Salutari picked up another shutout in net for the Tigers.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Tigers girls’ swimming and diving team lost its only meet of the week by dropping a 92-85 contest against Amity on Oct. 29.

Senior Ava Keane took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:57.28) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.12) for Hand at the meet. The Tigers’ 400 freestyle relay team of Keane, sophomore Julia Urbowicz, junior Kacie Wines, and senior Emma Ruffo finished first with a time of 3:55.09.
