Guilford Girls’ Cross Country Sweeps Tri-Meet; Field Hockey Posts Shutout Over Branford

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country squad swept a tri-meet at the Surf Club in Madison last week. Guilford recorded a 24-36 win over Daniel Hand and defeated Lyman Hall by the final score of 15-48 on Oct. 29.

Junior Julia Antony finished in second place by clocking in with a time of 20 minutes and 39 seconds for Guilford. Junior Lorelei King finished in fourth place (21:04), junior Olivia Skapczynski took fifth (21:12), and sophomore Olivia Kaisin came in sixth place (21:17) for Guilford. Junior Katrina Muhs finished seventh (21:30), sophomore Ursula Adams claimed eighth (21:36), and sophomore Clara Laughlin finished in 12th place (22:43) in the sweep.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Guilford boys’ cross country team split a tri-meet versus Daniel Hand and Lyman Hall at the Surf Club in Madison on Oct. 29. Guilford earned a 17-46 victory versus Branford and took a 24-35 loss against Hand at the meet.

Junior Justin Shiffrin finished in third place with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds for Guilford. Senior Tanner Updyke took fourth place in 17:34, and sophomore Michael Masotti was fifth at 17:40. Seniors Jackson Tandler and Caleb Harris finished in 14th and 16th place, respectively, with times of 18:16 and 18:33. Senior Ryan Tichy finished 19th with a time of 18:59, and junior Carson Tosta placed 20th at 19:03 for Guilford.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Guilford girls’ volleyball team maintained its perfect record by claiming road victories versus Hamden and West Haven last week. Guilford is now 10-0 with two matches left in the regular season.

Guilford notched a 3-1 win in Hamden on Oct. 26, taking the match with set scores of 25-10, 17-25, 25-11, and 25-10. Senior Emma Appleman had 18 kills and four aces, while senior Juliet Young posted 13 digs with three assists for Guilford. Senior Olivia Ciocca had 23 assists in the victory.

Three days later, Guilford played West Haven and prevailed by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-16) final. Appleman had 16 kills and five aces, Young contributed 11 digs with four aces, and Ciocca had 14 assists.

Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team split a pair of contests against Amity and Branford last week to move to 7-1-0-1 on the season.

On Oct. 27, Guilford traveled to Woodbridge to face Amity and lost by a 2-1 score in overtime. Four days later, Guilford bounced back by claiming 5-0 victory against Branford on the road.

In the Amity game, Guilford took 17 shots against Spartans’ goalie Peyton Rahn, but only scored one goal off a shot from junior Allie Petonito that was assisted by sophomore MJ Santa Barbara. Junior Julia McDonald made nine saves in net for Guilford.

Eve Young got the start in goal against Branford and earned the shutout victory by making six saves. Senior Hannah Tillier and junior Maddie Epke scored two goals apiece for Guilford with Petonito also netting a goal.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer squad took its first loss since the 2019 regular season when it dropped a 1-0 decision at Hand on Oct. 27. Guilford now has a record of 5-1-2 on the year.

Hand scored the only goal of the game with eight minutes remaining in the second half on its way to its win. Senior goalkeeper Julia Rubbo made nine saves for Guilford.
