Hand Boys’ Soccer Goes to 6-0; Girls’ Soccer, Swimming Get Wins Against Branford

Boys’ Soccer

The Hand boys’ soccer team raised its record to 6-0 after notching a pair of victories last week. The Tigers earned a home win over Xavier before defeating Branford on the road in recent action.

On Oct. 20, Hand hosted Xavier and slipped past the Falcons by a 2-1 final at the Surf Club. The Tigers fell into an early 1-0 deficit, but scored the last two goals of the game to prevail. Senior Jason Wallack netted the equalizer on an assist from senior Matt Luongo. Junior Aiden MacKay scored the game-winner when he headed home a goal on a pass by senior Chris Porte.

Three days later, the Tigers hit the road to face Branford and claimed a 5-2 victory over the Hornets. Senior Scott Testori had a huge game by scoring four goals for the Tigers. Porte added a goal for Hand in the win.

Girls’ Soccer

The Tigers’ girls’ soccer squad came away with a split of two recent games by taking a loss to Mercy and then defeating Branford. Hand now has a record of 3-2-1 this season.

Hand started off its week by taking a 3-0 road loss versus Mercy on Oct. 20.

Then on Oct. 23, the Tigers hosted Branford and edged out the Hornets by a 2-1 score at the Surf Club. Juniors Mia Forti and Maddie Hummell scored Hand’s goals in the victory. Junior goalie Brooke Salutari earned the win in net.

Field Hockey

The Hand field hockey squad took a 2-1 road loss against Cheshire on Oct. 19. Freshman Sydney Courtmanche scored the lone goal of the game for the Tigers, who now have a record of 4-2 on the season.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Hand girls’ volleyball team moved to 2-6 after dropping a pair of contests last week.

On Oct. 19, the Tigers took a 3-0 defeat against Guilford in a road match. Three days later, Hand faced Hamden on the road and lost by a 3-1 score.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team defeated Branford by the score of 84-80 in a virtual meet last week. The Tigers and Hornets competed separately at the Madison Racquet & Swim Club on Oct. 19. Hand won the matchup by four points, but had the victory solidified around the midway point of the meet, after which it went into exhibition scoring.

Senior Ava Keane took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:02.63) and also finished with the fastest time in the 100 backstroke (1:03.78) at the meet. Junior Kacie Wines claimed first place in both the 100 butterfly (1:06.06) and the 500 freestyle (5:50.38) to help the Tigers prevail. Senior Emma Ruffo won the 200 individual medley (2:29.30), sophomore Julia Urbowicz grabbed top honors in the 100 freestyle (1:00.95), and sophomore Abbigail Chemacki swam the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.69).

The Tigers’ 200 medley relay of Wines, Chemacki, Ruffo, and Keane posted a time of 2:04.86 to take first place against Branford. Hand’s 200 freestyle relay of senior Sophia Cadematori, freshman Sydney Mascia, freshman Molly Hoban, and freshman Lucy Schwarz recorded the top time of 2:07.64 at the meet. The 400 freestyle relay of Urbowicz, Wines, Ruffo, and Keane finished with the fastest time of 4:01.53.
