The Guilford boys’ cross country team picked up a pair of victories by sweeping a home tri-meet versus Branford and Sheehan the East River Preserve on Oct. 21. Guilford defeated Sheehan by a 17-44 score and won a 15-48 decision versus Branford at the meet.
Senior Tanner Updyke took first place for Guilford by crossing the finish line with a time of 17 minutes and 40 seconds in the race. Junior Justin Shiffrin took second place at 18:02 for Guilford, while sophomore Michael Masotti came in third place with a mark of 18:06. Sophomore Ryan Franchi finished in fifth at 18:19, and senior Jackson Tandler took sixth place with that same time.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Guilford girls’ cross country squad earned wins versus Sheehan and Branford in a tri-meet at the East River Preserve on Oct. 21. Guilford claimed a 19-42 victory over Sheehan and a 15-50 win against Branford.
Junior Julia Antony paced her way to a first-place performance by clocking in with a time of 18 minutes and 33 seconds for Guilford. Sophomore Olivia Kaisin came in third place (19:37) with junior Lorelei King finishing fourth (19:51) in the sweep. Junior Katrina Muhs placed fifth (19:56), while junior Olivia Skapczynski finished in sixth place (20:04) for Guilford.
Field Hockey
The Guilford field hockey team stayed strong by recording two more victories last week to improve its record to 6-1. Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s squad earned convincing wins versus Branford and Mercy in its recent matchups.
On Oct. 19, Guilford hosted Branford and won a 6-0 decision at Kavanaugh Field. Three days later, Guilford defeated Mercy by a 7-1 score on the road.
Junior goalie Julia McDonald earned the shutout for Guilford in the team’s win against Branford. McDonald and senior keeper Eve Young both saw time in net in the victory over Mercy. Senior Hannah Tillier scored five goals and had an assist between the two victories, while junior Maddie Epke posted four goals with five assists.
Junior Allie Petonito had two goals and two assists on the week for Guilford. Senior Ella Kagan and sophomore MJ Santa Barbara both scored one goal, and senior Madden Cunningham handed out two assists.
Boys’ Soccer
The Guilford boys’ soccer squad improved to 4-2-1 on the year by defeating Hamden and earning a tie with Cheshire last week.
On Oct. 20, Guilford played a road game versus Hamden and blanked the Green Dragons by a 2-0 score. Senior Anthony Ippolito scored the opening goal off an assist from fellow senior Niall O’Brien. Ippolito then had the assist on Guilford’s second goal when sophomore Will Rice found the back of the net later in the game. Sophomore goalie Justin Hess posted his second shutout of the season in the win.
Three days later, Guilford played Cheshire to a 1-1 draw at Kavanaugh Field. With Guilford trailing 1-0, senior Camilo Carmona leveled the score for Guilford when he buried a shot on a pass from fellow senior Evan Lemon.
Girls’ Soccer
The Guilford girls’ soccer team is standing with a mark of 4-0-2 this season after earning a tie and a win last week.
Guilford started off its week by playing a road game against Branford and played the Hornets to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 19. The following day, Guilford shut out Wilbur Cross by a 6-0 score in a home game at Kavanaugh Field.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving squad competed against Lyman Hall in a virtual meet last week. Guilford won the meet by the final score of 92-78 on Oct. 23.
