The North Haven boys’ soccer squad earned its first two wins of the year by posting shutouts against both Whitney Tech and Sheehan in two recent home games. Head Coach Reid Chieffo’s club improved to 2-2-1 on the season after blanking Whitney Tech (6-0) and Sheehan (4-0) last week.
North Haven kicked off the week by hosting Whitney Tech for a matchup at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 14. North Haven won the game in shutout fashion with a 6-0 victory for its first win in 2020.
Junior Derek Mortali recorded a hat trick by netting three goals for North Haven in the victory. Fellow junior Mike Brandt scored a pair of goals for North Haven, which also received a goal from sophomore Miguel Diaz-Hernandez. Senior goalkeepers Matt Casey and Rafe Lawless combined for the shutout in net.
Two days later, North Haven took on Sheehan for another home game and claimed a 4-0 win versus the Titans. Senior Kasey Mongillo found the back of the net three times to get a hat trick in the win. Junior Zion Teclechiel also scored a goal for North Haven. Senior Eduardo Cienfuegos de Paz contributed an assist on all four of North Haven’s goals on the night. Casey and Lawless combined for another shutout in goal.
Girls’ Soccer
The North Haven girls’ soccer team played games against Sacred Heart Academy and Sheehan last week. North Haven lost both contests to move to 0-5 on the year.
On Oct. 13, North Haven hosted Sacred Heart Academy and took a 2-0 loss at North Haven Middle School. Then on Oct. 16, Head Coach Gary Collins’s team took a 3-1 defeat in a road game against Sheehan.
Field Hockey
The North Haven field hockey team hosted Lauralton Hall for a Monday evening matchup on Oct. 12. Head Coach Kim Bouffard’s squad lost the 2-1 decision at North Haven Middle School. North Haven now has a record of 0-5 on the season.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team competed against Amity in a virtual meet last week. North Haven took a 100-86 defeat against the Spartans to put its record at 2-2 on the campaign.
North Haven’s athletes recorded their performances at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Oct. 12. Meanwhile, Amity’s competitors hit the water at High Plains Community Center to put forth their performances at the same time. When the final numbers were tallied, the Spartans came away with the victory.
Senior captain Maddie Bergin continued her stellar season by setting her third school record in as many weeks for North Haven when it faced Amity. Bergin swam a time of 5:05.08 in the 500 freestyle to break the longstanding school record of 5:07.01 that had been set by Katie Armitage in 1995. Bergin had already set school records in the 100 butterfly (59.07) and the 200 freestyle (1:53.92) earlier in the season.
North Haven saw several other athletes record lifetime-best performances in its meet versus Amity. Junior diver Chandler Ceste-Martinez posted a career-best point total of 194.20 points for Head Coach Martha Phelan’s squad. Junior Taya Laborde swam a lifetime best of 2:07.74 in the 200 freestyle, while sophomore Victoria Pachnik had lifetime-best swims in the 200 freestyle (2:23.00) and the 500 freestyle (6:23.97).
Sophomore Alice Scalmani turned in a lifetime best of 2:17.95 in the 200 individual medley, and junior Abrielle Osborne recorded a lifetime-best mark of 2:32.39 in the same event. Junior Giulia Faulkner went a lifetime-best of 58.44 in the 100 freestyle for North Haven.
