Guilford Girls’ Volleyball Goes to 6-0; Other Teams Also See Big Weeks

Girls’ Volleyball

The Guilford girls’ volleyball team continued its perfect start to the season by recording 3-0 victories over East Haven and Branford this past week. Head Coach Laura Anastasio’s team is now 6-0 on the year and has yet to drop a set.

Guilford claimed a 3-0 win in East Haven on Oct. 12. Senior Emma Appleman led the team on the attack by recording 14 kills. Fellow senior Juliet Young served up six aces in the win.

Two days later, Guilford hit the road to face Branford and won another 3-0 decision. Appleman and fellow senior Emily Brouder combined for 21 kills in the victory. Young had 13 digs with four aces, and senior Olivia Ciocca dealt out four aces for Guilford.

Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team put two wins in the books last week and now stands with a record of 4-1 this fall.

On Oct. 12, Guilford hosted Lyman Hall and posted a 10-0 shutout at Kavanaugh Field. Then on Oct. 15, Guilford traveled to Madison to face Daniel Hand and came home with a 3-1 victory.

Junior Allie Petonito scored four goals for Guilford during last week’s action. Senior Hannah Tillier and junior Maddie Epke netted three goals apiece on the week. Senior Izzy Gurnham, sophomore MJ Santa Barbara, and Payton Root all scored their first varsity goal during the week for Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s club.

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer team improved to 3-2 on the season after earning a pair of victories last week. Guilford recorded a home win over Career-Hillhouse before defeating Branford later in the week.

Guilford claimed a 6-1 road victory against Career-Hillhouse on Oct. 13. Seniors Camilo Carmona and Anthony Ippolito both scored a pair of goals for the Guilford in the win. Senior Aidan Buchanan had a goal with an assist, sophomore Will Rice also scored a goal, and junior Tanner Lewis had an assist for Guilford.

Three days later, Guilford hosted Branford and blanked the Hornets by a 2-0 score. Ippolito scored on an assist from senior Evan Lemon, while Buchanan had an unassisted goal for Head Coach Curtis Gullette’s team. Sophomore Justin Hess earned the win in net for Guilford in both of last week’s matchups.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer squad raised its record to 3-0-1 with a convincing victory last week. On Oct. 14, Guilford played a road game against Career-Hillhouse and prevailed by a 12-0 score at Bowen Field.
