East Haven Boys’ Soccer Wins Season Opener; Girls’ Soccer Posts Two Shutouts

Boys’ Soccer

The East Haven boys’ soccer squad notched its first win in Southern Connecticut Conference play since 2015 when the Yellowjackets defeated Career-Hillhouse in their season opener last week. East Haven went on to take losses against Wilbur Cross and Branford to move to 1-2 on the season.

On Oct. 6, the Yellowjackets traveled to New Haven to face Career-Hillhouse and prevailed by a 3-2 final at Bowen Field, marking the team’s first SCC victory since 2015. Senior Luis Agudelo scored two goals in the game, including the game-winner in the second half that gave the Yellowjackets a one-goal victory. Junior Anthony Sawicki scored a goal for East Haven, while junior Brayan Crespo and sophomore Christofher Torres each had an assist.

Two days later, East Haven dropped a 5-0 decision to Wilbur Cross at Bowen Field. Then on Oct. 10, the Yellowjackets lost to Branford by a 5-0 score in another road game.

Girls’ Soccer

The East Haven girls’ soccer team claimed a pair of road wins last week to raise its record to 2-1 on the fall season. The Yellowjackets posted shutouts against both Career-Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross in last week’s action.

On Oct. 5, East Haven defeated Career-Hillhouse by the final score of 8-0 at Bowen Field. Junior Emily Pycela scored two goals and handed out three assists for the Yellowjackets. Senior Bella Pilato had two goals with an assist, while sophomore Gianna Mendez and freshman Gianna Castellano both had a goal and an assist. Senior Teal Graziano and sophomore Mia Flores-Soto each scored a goal, and sophomore Gabriella Gaetano added an assist for East Haven. Senior goalie Angelina Munoz made five saves in the win.

Three days later, the Easties went back to New Haven and claimed a 4-0 win over Wilbur Cross for their second win on the year. Pilato, Mendez, Emily Pycela, and junior Jocelyn Lucero all scored a goal for the Easties. Gaetano, Pilato, Emily Pycela, junior Kate Pycela, and junior Emily Mazzucco contributed one assist apiece. Munoz had six saves, and freshman Jasmin Pinos made two saves in the game.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Yellowjackets’ girls’ volleyball team split a pair of recent matchups and now has a record of 3-1 on the year. East Haven defeated Daniel Hand before taking a loss to Hamden later in the week.

East Haven hosted Hand and swept the Tigers by a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-20) score on Oct. 5. Junior Kayla Stefania had 24 assists, while senior Kayla Goodrich recorded six kills for East Haven. Senior Carly Cordova had seven kills, four digs, and six aces in the win.

Then on Oct. 8, the Yellowjackets hosted Hamden and lost a 3-2 decision (20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-12) at East Haven High School. Sophomore Adriana Franceschi had five aces and two digs in the contest, while senior Megan Gaudioso added 15 digs and four aces for East Haven.
