Senior Maddie Bergin set her second school record is as many weeks when the North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team competed against Cheshire and Mercy in a pair of virtual meets last week. North Haven took a loss to Cheshire and then claimed a win over Mercy to move to 2-1 this year.
On Oct. 5, North Haven’s athletes turned in performances at their home site of Walter Gawrych Community Pool, while Cheshire’s athletes competed at the Cheshire Community Pool. When the final times and point totals were tabulated, the Rams had defeated North Haven 95.5-86.5.
North Haven’s performances from Oct. 5 were also measured against that of Mercy, which also competed in a meet against Amity that same day. North Haven notched a 96-72 victory versus Mercy for its second win of the campaign.
One week after setting the school record in the 100 freestyle, Bergin broke North Haven’s school record in the 200 freestyle during last week’s meets. Bergin swam a time of 1:53.92 on her way to breaking the record and taking first place in the event. She also won the 100 freestyle by swimming a time of 53.12.
Senior Riley Jooss finished first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:32.31 for North Haven last week. Sophomore Mikayla Rapuano posted a time of 1:01.10 in the 100 butterfly to win the event and help Head Coach Martha Phelan’s squad come away with the split.
Girls’ Volleyball
The North Haven girls’ volleyball squad picked up its first win of the year by netting a 3-0 victory versus Mercy last week. North Haven also took losses against Lyman Hall and Cheshire and now has a record of 1-3 on the year.
On Oct. 5, North Haven went on the road to play Mercy. Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s squad came home with its first victory by sweeping the Tigers by a 3-0 score at Mercy High School.
On Oct. 8, North Haven hosted Lyman Hall and took a 3-0 loss at Fred Kelly Gymnasium. The following night, North Haven dropped a 3-1 decision versus Cheshire in a road match.
Field Hockey
The North Haven field hockey team started off the 2020 season by taking a few defeats. North Haven is 0-4 on the campaign after losing games to Amity, Hamden, Shelton, and Sacred Heart Academy during the first week of play.
North Haven took a 5-1 loss at Amity in its season opener on Oct. 1. Two days later, Head Coach Kim Bouffard’s squad hosted Hamden for its Senior Night game and lost by a 4-1 score at North Haven Middle School.
On Oct. 5, North Haven had a home game against Shelton and dropped a 2-1 decision. Then on Oct. 8, North Haven took an 8-0 defeat versus Sacred Heart Academy on the road.
Girls’ Soccer
The North Haven girls’ soccer squad hosted a pair of contests on the turf field at North Haven Middle School last week. The team lost a game against Cheshire and then took a loss to West Haven to move to 0-3 this fall.
North Haven started off its week by taking a 5-1 home loss to Cheshire on Oct. 6. Three nights later, Head Coach Gary Collins’s hosted West Haven and lost by a 4-0 score.
Boys’ Soccer
The North Haven boys’ soccer team was on the road to square off against Cheshire and West Haven in last week’s action. North Haven took a pair of defeats and now has a record of 0-2-1 on the year.
On Oct. 6, Head Coach Reid Chieffo’s club played Cheshire on the road and took a 5-2 loss to the Rams. Then on Oct. 9, North Haven dropped a 4-1 decision versus West Haven in a road game at Ken Strong Stadium.
