North Haven Swims to Virtual Win; Girls’ Soccer, Volleyball Lose First Contests

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team opened the 2020 season by competing against Daniel Hand in a virtual dual-meet last week. North Haven defeated the Tigers 98-77 in the contest on Oct. 2.

North Haven’s athletes began the meet at the Walter Gawrych Community Pool on the afternoon of Oct. 2. A few hours later, Hand’s athletes took to the water at their home pool at the Madison Racquet & Swim Club. The two teams’ totals were then compared to one another and the meet scored accordingly based on who finished in what place. In the end, North Haven came away with a 98-77 victory over the Tigers as Head Coach Martha’s Phelan’s squad started its season on a triumphant note.

Senior Maddie Bergin set the school record in the 100 freestyle by swimming a first-place time of 59.07 for North Haven. Bergin also took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.95. Riley Jooss won the 100 freestyle (57.65) and the 200 freestyle (2:04.61), Giulia Faulkner took first in the 200 individual medley (2:20.54) and the 500 freestyle (5:36.56), and Chandler Ceste-Martinez claimed first place in the diving competition with a total of 172.95 points for North Haven.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer squad was on the road to play Hamden for its first game of the fall campaign. North Haven dropped a 5-0 decision against the Green Dragons on Oct. 2.

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team hit the court to take on Sheehan in its season opener on Oct. 2. North Haven took a 3-0 defeat to the Titans at Fred Kelly Gymnasium.
