The Hand field hockey team started off the 2020 campaign by playing a road game versus Lyman Hall on Oct. 1. The Tigers defeated Lyman Hall by the final score of 5-0 to open the season on a triumphant note.
Sydney Courtmanche scored two goals to help Hand claim its win versus Lyman Hall. Grace Hartmann, Grace Goddard, and Grace Barrett netted one goal apiece for Head Coach Sue Leckey’s club.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Tigers kicked off their year by sweeping Mercy and Branford in a tri-meet at Mercy High School on Oct. 2. Hand claimed a 26-29 win versus Mercy and defeated Branford by the final tally of 23-33 to jump out to a 2-0 start on the campaign.
Morgan Combs claimed first place overall by running a time of 15 minutes and 48 seconds for Hand at the meet. Teammate Keelin Virgulto posted a time of 16:28 to take second place on the 2.4-mile course.
Boys’ Cross Country
Hand began its season by competing against Xavier and Branford in a tri-meet at Mercy High School last week. The Tigers came away with a split of meet by earning a 15-50 victory against Branford and taking an 18-43 loss versus Xavier on Oct. 2.
Dante Zucconi recorded the Tigers’ top finish by taking third place in the 2.4-mile race. Zucconi ran a time of 12 minutes and 26 seconds on his way to placing third.
Girls’ Soccer
The Hand girls’ soccer squad squared off with Guilford for its first game with new Head Coach Rob McConville last week. The Tigers took a 1-0 road loss to Guilford in their season opener at Kavanaugh Field on Oct. 2.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team opened the 2020 season by competing against North Haven in a virtual dual-meet last week. The Tigers took a 98-79 loss to North Haven in the contest on Oct. 2.
North Haven’s athletes began the meet by competing at its home site of Walter Gawrych Community Pool on the afternoon of Oct. 2. A few hours later, Hand’s athletes took to the water by competing at the outdoor facility at its home pool at the Madison Racquet & Swim Club. The two teams’ totals were then compared to one another and the meet scored accordingly based on who finished in what place. In the end, North Haven came away with a 98-79 victory over Hand, although the Tigers still turned in several strong performances in the matchup.
Hand saw several athletes record times that met the state-qualifying standard when it faced North Haven. The athletes who achieved that feat were Kacie Wines in the 200 freestyle (2:07.77), Abbigail Chemacki in the 200 individual medley (2:28.50) and 500 freestyle (5:41.16), Emma Ruffo in the 200 IM (2:30.32) and 100 backstroke (1:07.91), and Julia Urbowicz in the 100 butterfly (1:06.87) and 500 freestyle (5:58.55).
