H-K’s Soccer Squads Start Season with Victories

Girls’ Soccer

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ soccer team began its season by playing a road game versus Portland on Oct. 2. H-K defeated the Highlanders by the final score of 4-1 to start off the year with a victory.

Autumn Walton gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead when she scored on an assist from Morgan Madore 6:30 into the game. Two minutes later, Yumi Imai scored from Hadley Commerford to give H-K a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Just 1:07 into the second half, Kedarjah Lewis found the back of the net on Kaitlyn Parri’s assist to extend the lead to 3-0. With 24:10 left in the game, Madore scored from Lewis to give the Cougars a 4-0 advantage.

Sophia Torello and Brianna Nugent shared the goalkeeping duties for H-K in the game. Nugent made four saves in the second half for Head Coach Mike Shea’s squad.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars started off the 2020 campaign on a good note by claiming a 3-0 home victory over Portland in their opener on Oct. 1.

Cole Merriam scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute and netted another goal in the 19th minute to put H-K up 2-0 early. Senior captain Colby Whitehead followed with a goal off a free kick in the 26th minute to make it 3-0 in favor of H-K. Junior captain Ben Williams contributed an assist in the win.

Field Hockey

H-K hosted Morgan for its first game of the year on Oct. 1. The Cougars took a 6-0 loss against the Huskies at H-K High School.
