Pirates Surge Ahead in Deep River Horseshoe League

The Deep River Horseshoe League (DRHL) completed its penultimate week of play for the regular season on Aug. 13. With just one week left to go before the playoffs, Westbrook resident Kris Toohey and the Pirates have taken a significant first-place advantage in the standings, leading the rest of the pack by four games. Ivoryton's Vinny Joynas and the Cubs held on to second place with a one-game lead over Guilford resident Robert "Skip" Robinson and the Tigers, as well as Clinton's Mark Goodale and the Royals.

Goodale once again earned top marks among all Division A players with a series-high score of 157 in Week 9 action. The Braves' Cris "Cowboy" Christensen, who lives in Deep River, turned in the second-best mark with a series-high of 140. Old Lyme resident Gary "Pudge" Goodrich, who plays for the Orioles, came in third with a series high of 137. Robinson finished with a score of 123 for the week.

As for the B Division, the Pirates' Gerald Hines, a Higganum resident, led the way with a series high of 108 last week. Chester resident Andy Perna of the Rangers was right behind him with a 104. The Yankees' Ted Dubay, who lives in Colchester, had a series high of 103 for third place.

Chester resident Karen Perna of the Pirates not only topped all Division C players with her series-high score of 110, but she also outpaced all the Division B players, as well. The Cubs' Scott Allen, Jr., who lives in Deep River, came in second place with a score of 105. The Mets' Jeremy Davis, a Chester resident, claimed third with a score of 93.

Following Week 9 play, the standings show the Pirates in first place with their record of 38-16. The Cubs are four games back at 34-20, while the Tigers and Royals are in a tie for third place with the same record of 33-21. The Rangers are in fifth place with a record of 32-22, and the Mets are holding onto sixth at 29-25.

The rest of the standings are as follows: Cardinals (28.5-25.5), Angels (27-27), Giants (26-28), White Sox (24.5-29.5), Red Sox (24.5-29.5), Reds (24-30), Dodgers (23-31), Yankees (21.5-32.5), Orioles 19-35), and Braves (15-39).

The Deep River Horseshoe League has 16 teams that feature three players of each of the A, B, and C divisions. The league plays every Thursday night on the First Congregational Green in Deep River and welcomes anyone to come watch its contests. For info on the league, visit deepriverhorseshoes.com.
