08/10/2020 12:00 AMThe Deep River Horseshoe League (DRHL) got back on schedule last week after Week 7's games were postponed due to inclement weather. On Aug. 3, the DRHL played Week 7's contests just before Tropical Storm Isaias tore through Connecticut, and then on Aug. 6, the pins rattled again as throwers were able to complete Week 8's matches. With two weeks left in the regular season, it's all to play for in the DRHL.
After last week's action, the Pirates remain in first place, but the standings below them shuffled just a bit. The Cubs moved into second place, overtaking the Royals and the Rangers, who fell to third and fourth place, respectively. Guilford A Player Robert "Skip" Robinson scored a series of 99 to help the Tigers remain in fifth place, while the Royals' A player Mark Goodale, who lives in Clinton, reasserted his dominance by leading all players in both slates of matches.
On Aug. 3, Goodale led all throwers with a series-high score of 161, while the Rangers' Mike Zanelli, Sr., a Higganum resident, turned in a series of 148. The Cardinals' Tony Cutone, who is from Essex, tallied a score of 131 for third best.
Chester's Andy Perna took the top score among B players with a mark of 108, and Old Saybrook resident John Nilson, who plays for the Red Sox, came in just behind Perna at 107. The Yankees' Ted Dubay of Colchester came in third place for the Bs.
As for the C players, the Cubs' Scott Allen, Jr., of Deep River tallied a mark of 103 points for first place. The Pirates' Karen Perna (Chester) posted the second highest series at 100, while the Orioles' Frank Durinick came in at 98.
The Cubs started their recent climb after this cluster of contests and moved into a tie for third place with the Rangers thanks in part to Allen, Jr.'s top marks against his Division C opponent. A player Vinny Joynas of Deep River added a score of 91, and Anthony Conklin of Marlborough supplied an 84 en route to their 5-1 victory over the Yankees. The Pirates first-place record stood at 29-13 after the seventh slate, while the Royals moved to 27.5-14.5. The Cubs and Rangers tied for third place at 26-16, and the Cardinals held fourth place at 24.5-17.5, just a half-game ahead of the fifth-place Tigers at 24-18. The Mets and Giants were tied at sixth place with identical records of 22-20.
The rest of the standings shook out as follows: Red Sox (20.5-21.5), White Sox (20-22), Reds (18-24), Dodgers (18-24), Yankees (16.5-25.5), Angels (16-26), Orioles (14-28), and Braves (12-30).
On Aug. 6, Goodale found himself at the top of the heap again with a score of 145, just beating out the Reds' Billy Beckwith, an Old Lyme resident, who had a score of 143. Cutone earned third with a score of 134.
Andy Perna led all of Division B again with a score of 114. Dubay took second this time with a mark of 109 to outpace third-place Nilson at 107.
Allen, Jr. had a fantastic series and finished ahead of all B and C players with a mark of 121. Karen Perna scored 100 for the second time of the week, while Durinick's tally of 97 was a single tally lower than his prior series.
The Pirates went 4-2 to beat the Cardinals and solidified a two game lead for first place at 33-15. The Cubs went 5-1 for the second straight week to defeat the Orioles and staked a single game lead over the third-place Royals at 30-18. The Rangers' record of 29-19 placed them in fourth, while the Tigers were just a game back in fifth place at 28-20.
The rest of the standings show the Cardinals (26.5-21.5), Mets (25-23), White Sox (23.5-24.5), Red Sox (23.5-24.5), Angels (22-26), Giants (22-26), Reds (21-27), Dodgers (21-27), Yankees (19.5-28.5), Orioles (15-33), and Braves (15-34).
