North Haven Sees Busy Week with Several Close Games

The North Haven U-19 baseball team saw a mixture of results in last week’s matchups and now stands with a record of 3-9 in the Connecticut Elite Baseball Association. North Haven split a doubleheader with New Haven, split a two-game series against Milford, and then lost two games to West Haven in its recent Division II contests.

North Haven squared off against New Haven for a doubleheader at West Rock Field on July 18. Head Coach Mike Busillo’s squad came away with a split of the double dip by notching a 13-3 victory in the first game and losing a 9-7 decision in the nightcap.

North Haven held a 6-3 lead heading into the top of seventh inning in the first game of its doubleheader with New Haven. North Haven broke the game open by scoring seven runs in the seventh inning and went on to win the game by a 13-3 score.

Ryan Cannon earned the win on the mound by pitching six innings in which he allowed three runs (1 earned) on three hits to go with five strikeouts. Zach Blest pitched a scoreless seventh to finish off the win.

Cannon also had a big day at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three runs scored, and four RBI for North Haven. Chris Hager was 2-for-2 with two walks, a run, two RBI, and two stolen bases; Christopher Tobin went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run, and two RBI; and Ryan Balzano was 1-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and two RBI in the victory.

Also for North Haven, Anthony Maggiore hit an RBI triple, Blest had an RBI double and scored a run, Sal Giamo went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Anthony Denya was 2-for-2 with a stolen base, and Derek Novicki had two walks with a run scored.

In the second game of the doubleheader, North Haven faced a 9-3 deficit entering the bottom of the seventh inning. North Haven scored four runs in the inning, but New Haven was able to hang on for the 9-7 victory.

Ryan Balzano got the start for North Haven and pitched four hitless innings, allowing two runs (1 earned). Blest worked two hitless innings in relief. New Haven put up a five-spot in the fifth inning that proved the difference in the game.

Blest went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, Tobin was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base, and Balzano went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Devin Santiago went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base; Novicki went 1-for-4 with a triple, a run, and an RBI; and Hager was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the game.

On July 19, North Haven hosted Milford and prevailed by the final tally of 8-7 at DeMayo Ballfield. North Haven was up 4-3 before scoring four runs in the sixth inning to make it 8-3 entering the seventh. Milford rallied for four runs in the final frame to cut it to 8-7, but was unable to score the tying run as North Haven came away with the victory.

Alexander Bauman picked up the win after pitching 6.1 innings for North Haven. JJ Mazzaro escaped a jam in the seventh inning by retiring the last two batters of the game to secure the victory.

Blest went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored, and two RBI to lead the North Haven offense. Novicki went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and a stolen base; Jason Senberg was 1-for-1 with two runs and an RBI, Mazzaro went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI; Ty Rooney drew a walk and scored two runs, and Santiago was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.

On July 21, North Haven played a road game versus Milford and took a 6-3 defeat at Foran High School. Milford grabbed the early lead by plating three runs in the second inning. North Haven chipped away and was only down 4-3 going into the sixth, where Milford scored a pair of insurance runs to make it 6-3.

Blest continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-3 in the game. Balzano was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Novicki was 1-for-1 with two walks and an RBI, and Santiago and Hager both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The next day, North Haven took a 4-0 road loss against West Haven at Piurek Field. West Haven scored two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth on its way to the win. Rooney went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base, while Novicki was 1-for-2 with a walk for North Haven.

On July 24, North Haven took a 2-1 loss to West Haven at DeMayo Ballfield. West Haven scored two runs in the sixth inning to go up 2-0. North Haven rallied to make it 2-1 in bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t push home the tying run.

Bauman pitched two scoreless innings, Mazzaro tossed a scoreless inning, Novicki gave up two unearned runs in 2.2 innings, and Maggiore pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for North Haven. Mike Anquillare and Hager each went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate.
