Branford U-17 Baseball Notches First Victory

The Branford U-17 baseball team picked up its first victory in the Connecticut Elite Baseball Association by earning a win versus Shelton last week.

Branford played home game against Division II opponent Shelton on July 13. Head Coach Michael Krause’s squad put its win of the summer in the books with an 8-1 victory Branford High School. John Onofrio earned the win on the mound by pitching six solid innings for Branford. Onofrio allowed just one run on two hits and struck out six in his 90-pitch performance.

At the plate, Austin Collins went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, Harry Smith was 1-for-1 with two walks and an RBI, and Dave Loomis went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored for Branford. Mike Farricielli was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Ben Steginal went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Then on July 16, Branford hosted Madison for another Division II matchup at Branford High School. Branford took a 3-0 defeat to Madison. Starting pitcher Zach Turbert threw four strong innings for Branford, allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts in the game. Unfortunately, Branford’s offense was unable to get anything going against Madison’s starting pitcher.

Then on July 17, Branford lost a 9-3 contest against Wallingford in a road game. Branford was only down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Wallingford scored six runs to break open the game.
