Branford Father’s Day Road Race Goes Virtual,Will Benefit Food Pantry and Community Dining Room

In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the 40th annual Branford Road Race will be held as a virtual event in 2020. Participants can register for the virtual five-mile run, two-mile health walk, or the family fun run, and then participate at the time and place of their choosing during Father’s Day weekend, which is from Thursday, June 18 to Monday, June 22.

This year, the event is benefitting two community organizations that focus on feeding people who are in need. The proceeds from the race will benefit the Branford Food Pantry and the Community Dining Room. Both organizations have seen an increase in demand since the pandemic began. The Branford Festival, which traditionally takes place on the same weekend as the road race, is also supporting these local organizations this year.

The Father’s Day Race has been an annual Branford tradition for the past 40 years. Ray Figlewski, the founder of the race, was happy to find an alternative to canceling the event.

“The decision to make the event virtual was not an easy one. However, the safety of all participants, volunteers, supporters, and spectators is our No. 1 priority,” Figlewski said. “Having a virtual race means we can still promote fun and family on Father’s Day, while also giving back to our community that has been impacted by COVID-19.”

Participants will receive their bibs and custom road race shirts in the mail prior to the virtual event. Results will be self-reported and complied into a race results database. Race organizers look forward to participants sharing their experiences on social media. To register for the event and for more info, visit branfordroadrace.net.
