Westbrook Girls’ Hoops Wins Class S Opener, Loses Next Game; Boys Playing in States This Week

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball squad had a pair of contests in the Class S State Tournament last week. The Knights scored a big comeback 55-37 victory over Wolcott Tech in the first round, but took a 56-18 defeat to Thomaston in the second round. With these results, Westbrrok finished with a final overall record of 7-16 on the year.

On March 3, the No. 23 Knights hit the road to face Wolcott Tech at Kaynor Technical School in Waterbury. Westbrook fell behind early as the Wildcats took a 10-7 lead after the first quarter and then extended that lead to 24-18 by halftime. Westbrook got a bit closer in the third and trailed 28-25 headed into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, the Knights offense exploded for 30 points, and outscored the Wildcats 30-9 in the quarter. Ultimately, Westbrok won by a 55-37 margin.

Three days later, Westbrook took a tough 56-18 loss to No. 7 seed Thomaston. The defeat brought the Knights’ 2019-’20 season to a close.

Boys’ Basketball

Westbrook begins play in the Division V State Tournament this week. The Knights enter the bracket as the No. 22 seed and will head to No. 11 seed Hale-Ray for a first-round contest on Monday, March 9 at 7 p.m. A win against the Noises would pit Westbrook in a road contest against No. 6 seed Achievement First on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the second round. The quarterfinals are set for Friday, March 13 and the semifinals will be on Tuesday, March 17. The Division V State Tournament final will be either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Additionally, Jack Naccarato earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors last week for his stellar play this season.
