Valley’s Co-op Swim Team Takes 2nd at Nutmegs; Boys’ Hoops Lose in Shoreline Semis


Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving team finished in second place at the Nutmeg Conference Championship last week. The Cougars totaled 286 points on their way to earning runner-up honors at Windsor Locks High School on March 5.

H-K seniors Eli Houlton and Kyle Mazziotti both won two individual events and swam on a victorious relay. Houlton was named the Swimmer of the Meet.

Houlton took first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.12 for the Cougars. He also won the 500 freestyle by recording a time of 4:53.40.

Mazziotti delivered a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle behind a time of 49.80 seconds. Later in the meet, Mazziotti finished first for the 100 backstroke by hitting the finish line in 55.37.

The Cougars’ 400 freestyle relay of H-K senior Jimmy Clemente, Mazziotti, H-K freshman Jack Ferguson, and Houlton claimed first place with a mark of 3:27.84.

The 200 medley relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, Clemente, and H-K sophomore Colby Kish came in second place by posting a time of 1:46.29. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Kish, Valley junior Egan Rothrock, Morgan sophomore Connor Levy, and H-K freshman Connor Schipritt recorded a time of 1:37.97 to take second place.

Ferguson finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.50) and was third in the 500 freestyle (5:17.65) for H-K/M/VR. Clemente finished fourth for the 100 butterfly (59.51) and placed sixth in the 50 freestyle (24.75).

Rothrock came in fourth place for both the 200 IM (2:14.36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.02). Kish finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.27), while Levy took sixth in the 200 IM (2:19.35) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.59). Valley junior Matt Scowronek finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.99.

Boys’ Basketball

The Valley Regional boys’ basketball team lost in the Shoreline Conference semifinal against Morgan last week. The No. 2 seed Warriors hosted No. 3 seed Morgan and took a 70-62 overtime loss against the Huskies. With the defeat, Valley’s overall record moved to 17-5 on the season.

On March 3, the Warriors took a 70-62 overtime loss to Morgan. Valley held a 17-16 advantage after the first, and had the same one-point margin at halftime with the 27-26 score. After the third quarter, Morgan took a 38-37 edge, and both teams were tied at 52-52 after four quarter of play. In the overtime period, Morgan went on a run to outscore Valley, 18-10, and the Huskies ultimately won 70-62.

Chris Sparaco led the scoring ttack with 18 points to go with nine rebounds and an assist, while Jake Grow tallied 16 points and four rebounds. Gavin Grabowski scored 15 points with seven rebounds, seven steals, and three assists. Cade Ensinger had 10 points, five steals, three assists, and a rebound, while Dylan Sparaco had three points, two rebounds, five assists, and two steals. John Tibbetts supplied five rebounds and three assists, and Macklin Miezejeski had a pair of boards.

Valley begins play in the Division V State Tournament this week. The Warriors enter the bracket as the No. 3 seed and earned a bye in the first round. Valley will host the winner between No. 14 seed Metropolitan Learning Center versus Thomaston in a second round contest on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. The quarterfinals are set for Friday, March 13 and the semifinals will be on Tuesday, March 17. The Division V State Tournament final will be either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Morgan-Valley Regional-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH) co-op boys’ ice hockey squad took a loss to Branford in the semifinals of the SCC/SWC Division II Tournament last week. On March 5, the 4th-seeded Yellowjackets faced off against No. 1 seed Branford in the conference semis and lost by a 7-0 score at Bennett Rink. EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH has an overall record of 8-13 as the team opens play in the Division II State Tournament this week.

EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH is the No. 14 seed in states and will begin the draw by playing a first-round game at No. 3 Farmington Valley at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 9. With a win, the Yellowjackets would play the winner of No. 6 Woodstock Academy and No. 11 Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 13. The semifinals are at Ingalls Rink on Tuesday, March 17 and the Division II state final will take place at Ingalls Rink at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 23
