North Haven Beats Lyman Hall in States, Loses in 2nd Round; Iamunno Wins Three Bouts at New Englands

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball team notched a victory in its first game of the Class L State Tournament before taking a loss in its second-round contest last week. The Indians defeated Lyman Hall by a 38-32 score in first-round action and then dropped a 58-47 decision against St. Paul in the second round. North Haven finished with an overall record of 14-10 in its first campaign with Head Coach Tom Blake, qualifying for both SCCs and states and then winning a game in each bracket.

North Haven entered the Class L State Tournament as the No. 15 seed and hosted No. 18 Lyman Hall for a first-round contest at Fred Kelly Gymnasium on March 3. The Indians used a dominating fourth quarter to claim a 38-32 victory versus the Trojans and advance to the second round. North Haven was down 30-29 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored Lyman Hall by a 9-2 margin during the final frame to walk off the floor with the victory.

Sophomore Eveani Okwuosa scored 15 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals for North Haven in the win. Junior Sarah Puzone had five points with five boards, two steals, and two assists, while senior Laura Petrafesa scored five points and grabbed a pair of steals.

Senior Colleen Lucey had four points with four rebounds and two steals, and junior Julia Bogen scored four points to go with two steals. Junior Carly Fresher had three points with four steals and two assists, while fellow junior Olivia Stefanik contributed two points, six rebounds, and one steal to the Indians’ winning effort.

On March 6, North Haven was on the road to play No. 2 seed St. Paul in the second round of states. The Indians were eliminated from the tournament with a 58-47 defeat against the Falcons.

Boys’ Basketball

North Haven opens play in the Division III State Tournament as the No. 23 seed this week. With their overall record of 9-12, the Indians will play at No. 10 seed Law in a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9. With a victory, North Haven would face the winner of No. 7 St. Joseph and No. 26 Seymour in the second round at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. The quarterfinals are at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13; the semifinals take place on Tuesday, March 17; and the Division III state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena on either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22.

Wrestling

Joe Iamunno wrapped up a sensational season on the wrestling mat when the freshman competed at the New England Championship last weekend. Iamunno won three bouts while wrestling in the 120-pound division at the New England Championship, which was held at Methuen High School in Methuen, Massachusetts on March 7 and 8.

Iamunno started off his run at the New England meet by earning a pinfall victory versus Dylan Clifford from Brookline, Masschusetts at the 3:25 mark of their round-of-32 bout. In the round-of-16, Iamunno took on No. 3 seed Brycen Kowalsky of Topsham, Maine and prevailed by a 15-0 score via technical fall. Then in the quarterfinals, Iamunno lost a 9-6 decision against Ian Darling of Boxford, Massachusetts to go to the consolation bracket.

Iamunno pinned Martial Sutton from Glastonbury at the 4:32 mark in his first consolation match. In his next contest, Iamunno was eliminated from the tournament when he lost a 7-5 decision against Dylan Levesque of East Hampton.

Iamunno had previously finished in first place for the 120-pound weight class at the SCC Championship, then took the title at the Class L State Championship, followed by a second-place performance in the State Open. Iamunno won the SCC crown with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Colin Loria of Xavier in the championship match of the 120-pound bracket. At the Class L meet, Iamunno pinned Mason Lishness from Bristol Eastern just 40 seconds into the final to claim state gold after winning his three previous bouts on pinfalls. Iamunno then won three matches at the State Open to advance to the championship bout, where he lost a 5-0 decision against Drew Currier from Hall.

Iamunno trained with the wrestling team at Notre Dame-Fairfield and competed at the Lancers’ meets during the regular season. Iamunno represented North Haven as a team-of-one and scored points on behalf of the Indians in his postseason competitions.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team saw its season come to a close when the Blades lost to Guilford in the first round of the State Tournament last week. On March 3, the 8th-seeded Blades hosted No. 9 Guilford for a first-round states game and took a 5-3 defeat at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. A-NH-C, which had taken a 4-2 loss to Guilford in the SCC final the previous week, finished with an overall record of 13-9-1 for the campaign.

The Blades took a 1-0 lead over Guilford when Tess Csjeka scored an unassisted goal during the first period. Guilford came back by scoring five goals in the second period and went on to get the 5-3 victory.

Guilford the first three goals of the second period to take a 3-1 advantage. A-NH-C countered when Samantha Drane scored from Csjeka and Caroline Cadelina to make it 3-2. After the Indians scored their fourth goal, the Blades responded on Csjeka’s goal from Sarah Cable to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Guilford closed out the period by scoring its fifth goal of the frame to take a 5-3 lead that held up as the final.
