Morgan’s Co-op Swim Team Takes 2nd at Nutmegs; Girls’ Hoops Loses in 2nd Round of States


Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving team finished in second place at the Nutmeg Conference Championship last week. The Cougars totaled 286 points on their way to earning runner-up honors at Windsor Locks High School on March 5.

H-K seniors Eli Houlton and Kyle Mazziotti both won two individual events and swam on a victorious relay. Houlton was named the Swimmer of the Meet.

Houlton took first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.12 for the Cougars. He also won the 500 freestyle by recording a time of 4:53.40.

Mazziotti delivered a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle behind a time of 49.80 seconds. Later in the meet, Mazziotti finished first for the 100 backstroke by hitting the finish line in 55.37.

The Cougars’ 400 freestyle relay of H-K senior Jimmy Clemente, Mazziotti, H-K freshman Jack Ferguson, and Houlton claimed first place with a mark of 3:27.84.

The 200 medley relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, Clemente, and H-K sophomore Colby Kish came in second place by posting a time of 1:46.29. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Kish, Valley junior Egan Rothrock, Morgan sophomore Connor Levy, and H-K freshman Connor Schipritt recorded a time of 1:37.97 to take second place.

Ferguson finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.50) and was third in the 500 freestyle (5:17.65) for H-K/M/VR. Clemente finished fourth for the 100 butterfly (59.51) and placed sixth in the 50 freestyle (24.75).

Rothrock came in fourth place for both the 200 IM (2:14.36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.02). Kish finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.27), while Levy took sixth in the 200 IM (2:19.35) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.59). Valley junior Matt Scowronek finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.99.

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team played a pair of Class M State Tournament contests last week. The Huskies picked up a win over Immaculate in the first round, but lost to Stonington in the second round. With these results, Morgan’s season came to an end with a final overall record of 18-7 on the year.

On March 2, the No. 6 seed Huskies hosted No. 27 seed Immaculate and won a 52-47 first round contest over the Mustangs. Morgan got out to a 13-10 lead in the first quarter, and maintained a narrow 24-23 lead by halftime. The Huskies inched ahead to take a 36-32 lead heading into the final frame, and Morgan was able to hold off the Mustangs for the 52-47 final.

Catie Donadio led the scoring push with 23 points to go with eight rebounds, five steals, two blocks, and two assists. Leah McComiskey provided eight points, 10 boards, seven blocks, three assists, and two steals. Caeley Ayer supplied 12 points, seven assists, four steals, and five blocks, while Alex Kelly hauled in nine rebounds and two steals. Katie Martin added eight points, five rebounds, three steals, a block, and an assist.

On March 5, Morgan hosted No. 22 seed Stonington and took a 59-50 home loss against the Bears. Stonington took an early 12-9 lead, and held a 24-21 advantage at the half. By the end of the third quarter, the Huskies were behind 43-37, and Stonington added onto its lead in the fourth to take the 59-50 decision.

Donadio provided 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and four blocks. McComiskey scored nine points to go with 10 rebounds, six blocks, three assists, and two steals. Ayer provided nine points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks, while Martin scored eight points to go with six boards and a block. Kelly notched six points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
