McHenry Wins Three Matches in New Englands; Kustra Competes on Bars at State Open

Senior Cody McHenry finished his exceptional career as a Branford wrestler when he competed among the region’s elite at the New England Championship last week. McHenry recorded three victories in the 195-pound division at the New England Championship, which was held at Methuen High School in Methuen, Massachusetts on March 7 and 8.

McHenry started off the draw at New Englands by pinning Gus Irwin from Dexter, Maine at the 4:00 mark of their round-of-32 bout. In the round-of-16, McHenry lost to top-seeded Darby McLaughlin from Springfield, Massachusetts by pinfall at the 48-second mark to go to the consolation bracket.

In his first consolation match, McHenry pinned Jack Carbone of North Andover, Massachusetts at the 2:30 mark. McHenry went on to win a 9-2 decision over Ed Wild from Rhode Island in his next contest. In his next consolation bout, McHenry lost to Shawn Conniff on a 16-5 majority decision.

Earlier in the postseason, McHenry finished first in the 195-pound weight class at the SCC Championship, took fifth place at the Class M State Championship, and then came in fourth place in the State Open. McHenry finishes his Hornets’ wrestling career with a school-record total of 144 victories.

Gymnastics

Junior Brooke Kustra represented Branford gymnastics at the State Open Championship that took place at New Milford High School on March 7. Kustra competed in the uneven bars event at the State Open and finished in 15th place out of 36 competitors with a score of 8.575.

Previously in the postseason, Kustra earned a third-place finish in the all-around when she finished with a score of 32.8 at the SCC Championship. Kustra took second place on bars (8.3), third for the beam (8.3), and fifth place on vault (8.3) to make the All-SCC Team for the third year in a row.

Girls’ Basketball

Branford was on the road to play Killingly in the first round of the Class MM State Tournament on March 3. The 26th-seeded Hornets lost a 47-35 decision versus No. 7 seed Killingly to finish with an overall record of 7-14 for the campaign.
