Hand Girls’ Hoops Advances to Class L Quarters; Boys’ Hockey Loses in Conference Semis

Girls’ Basketball

The Hand girls’ basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class L State Tournament by winning its first two games in the draw last week. The Tigers stand with an overall record of 20-4 entering their quarterfinal matchup against East Lyme.

As the No. 4 seed, Hand started off states by facing No. 29 seed South Windsor for a first-round home game on March 3. The Tigers claimed a 57-34 victory over the Bobcats to move on to the second round.

Three days later, Hand hosted No. 20 seed Wilton for a second-round showdown and prevailed by the final score of 47-29.

The Tigers are hosting No. 21 seed East Lyme for a Class L quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 12. With a victory, the Tigers would face the winner of top-seeded Notre Dame-Fairfield and No. 8 seed Windsor in the semifinals on Monday, March 16. The Class L state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena on either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Tigers took a loss to North Haven in the semifinal round of the SCC/SWC Division II Tournament last week. With their overall record of 17-3-1, the Tigers will open play in the Division II State Tournament this week.

No. 2 seed Hand took on No. 3 North Haven in the conference semifinals at Bennett Rink on March 5. Hand took a 1-0 lead early in the second period, but North Haven tied the game during the third to force overtime. The game was tied 1-1 following regulation and a five-minute overtime period, sending it to a shootout. North Haven won the shootout session by a 2-1 margin to get the 2-1 victory and advance to the championship game.

Joey DeAngelis scored the Tigers’ goal on an assist from fellow junior Josh Ruotolo. Junior goalie Eric Dillner made 24 saves in the contest.

The SCC/SWC announced its All-Conference teams last week. Junior captain forward Tatum Fitzmaurice earned All-SCC/SWC First Team honors for Hand, while junior captain defenseman John Gagliardi secured a spot on the Second Team.

Hand is the No. 2 seed in the Division II State Tournament and will start off the draw by hosting No. 15 Guilford for a first-round game on Monday, March 9 at 3:45 p.m. If the Tigers win, they will take on the winner of No. 7 North Haven and No. 10 Trumbull in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 13. The semifinals will take place at Ingalls Rink on Tuesday, March 17, and the Division II state final is at Ingalls Rink at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 23.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Hand finished in sixth place at the SCC Championship meet last week. The Tigers scored 665.50 points on their way to taking sixth place at Southern Connecticut State University on March 4.

Senior Daniel Chen took third place in the 100 backstroke and finished sixth in the 200 individual medley at SCCs. Chen swam a time of 54.52 seconds to place third for the 100 backstroke. In the 200 IM, Chen finished with a time of 2:00.36 to come in sixth place.

Senior Will Porter claimed sixth place in the 100 freestyle for the Tigers. Porter hit the finish line with a mark of 49.53 for his sixth-place performance.

Chen and Porter also helped Hand’s 400 freestyle relay finish in sixth place. The Tigers’ unit of sophomore Joe Starkey, sophomore Jack Signorello, Chen, and Porter recorded a time of 3:24.62 to take sixth place.
