Greater New Haven Warriors Finish 5th at SCCs

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team posted a pair of first-place finishes on its way to taking fifth place as a squad at the SCC Championship last week. The Warriors scored 712.5 points to finish fifth out of the 13 teams that competed in the SCC meet, which was held at Southern Connecticut State University on March 4.

Guilford senior Aidan Henry claimed first place in the 500-yard freestyle and also swam on the Warriors’ victorious 400 freestyle relay at the SCC Championship. In the 500 freestyle, Henry swam a time of 4:39.45 to place ahead of runner-up Justin Finkel of Cheshire (4:48.78) by nine seconds and win the event for the second-straight year at SCCs.

Later in the meet, GNH’s 400 freestyle relay of East Haven sophomore Hethon Foster, North Haven junior Cameron Cargan, Guilford sophomore Finn Henry, and Aidan Henry took first place by recording a time of 3:15.98. The Warriors’ quartet beat out the team from Cheshire (3:17.66) to earn top honors in the event.

GNH also finished second in three events at the SCC Championship. Aidan Henry swam time of 22.09 seconds for runner-up honors in the 50 freestyle, only placing behind Jack Rogers of Fairfield Prep (21.98). Foster took second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.85, finishing just behind Joseph Zellner from Sheehan (48.82) for the top spot.

The Warriors’ 200 freestyle relay of Foster, Cargan, Finn Henry, and Aidan Henry earned second place with a mark of 1:29.55. Xavier finished first in the event at 1:28.76.

Finn Henry finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:45.97) and took fifth place for the 500 freestyle (4:54.72) at the SCC Championship. Cargan finished tied for ninth place in the 50 freestyle (23.26) and came in 10th in the 100 freestyle (50.96) for the Warriors.

GNH’s 200 medley relay of Guilford junior David Zhang, North Branford junior Connor Coyne, North Haven junior Tanner Powell, and Guilford freshman Aiden Cohen finished in eighth place with a time of 1:46.15.

Cohen finished 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:03.27) and was 16th for the 50 freestyle (23.72). Coyne placed 11th in the 100 butterfly (56.24) and took 14th place in the 200 individual medley (2:07.13). Foster finished 11th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.51.

Guilford junior Dan Kamen finished 14th in the 100 butterfly (58.16) and took 17th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.13). Zhang came in 16th place in the 100 butterfly (58.79) and finished 21st in the 200 IM (2:12.72).

North Branford freshman Spencer Carroll finished 17th in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.46) and placed 22nd in the 100 butterfly (1:00.13) for GNH. Powell finished 18th in the 50 freestyle (23.82) and was 25th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.40). North Haven senior Stephen Borrelli finished 19th in the 500 freestyle (5:19.99) and came in 27th place for the 200 freestyle (1:58.52).

Joey Gould finished 25th in the 500 freestyle (5:33.46), while fellow Guilford freshman Lucas Espinosa took 25th place in the 100 backstroke (1:03.39) and was 29th in the 200 IM (2:18.37). Guilford senior Evan Laughlin finished 28th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.75.

One week prior to the swimming portion of the meet, North Haven freshman Christian Butler competed for the Warriors at the SCC Diving Championship. Butler totaled a score of 321.25 points to finish in sixth place at Sheehan High School on Feb. 28.
