Cougars Swim to 2nd in Nutmeg Championship; Gagliardi Takes 10th All-Around at State Open

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving team finished in second place at the Nutmeg Conference Championship last week. The Cougars totaled 286 points on their way to earning runner-up honors at Windsor Locks High School on March 5.

H-K seniors Eli Houlton and Kyle Mazziotti both won two individual events and swam on a victorious relay. Houlton was named the Swimmer of the Meet.

Houlton took first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.12 for the Cougars. He also won the 500 freestyle by recording a time of 4:53.40.

Mazziotti delivered a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle behind a time of 49.80 seconds. Later in the meet, Mazziotti finished first for the 100 backstroke by hitting the finish line in 55.37.

The Cougars’ 400 freestyle relay of H-K senior Jimmy Clemente, Mazziotti, H-K freshman Jack Ferguson, and Houlton claimed first place with a mark of 3:27.84.

The 200 medley relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, Clemente, and H-K sophomore Colby Kish came in second place by posting a time of 1:46.29. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Kish, Valley junior Egan Rothrock, Morgan sophomore Connor Levy, and H-K freshman Connor Schipritt recorded a time of 1:37.97 to take second place.

Ferguson finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.50) and was third in the 500 freestyle (5:17.65) for H-K/M/VR. Clemente finished fourth for the 100 butterfly (59.51) and placed sixth in the 50 freestyle (24.75).

Rothrock came in fourth place for both the 200 IM (2:14.36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.02). Kish finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.27), while Levy took sixth in the 200 IM (2:19.35) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.59). Valley junior Matt Scowronek finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.99.

Gymnastics

H-K freshman Juliana Gagliardi finished in 10th place for the all-around when she competed at the State Open Gymnastics Championship last week. The meet was held at New Milford High School on March 7.

Gagliardi posted a combined score of 34.9 for her four events to place 10th in the all-around at the Open. Gagliardi’s best showing came on the beam, where she took fifth place with a score of 9.0. Gagliardi also finished 11th for the floor (8.8), 13th on vault (8.85), and 23rd on bars (8.25) at the State Open Championship. She advances to compete at the New England Championship on Saturday, March 14.

Wrestling

Junior Thomas Perry represented the H-K wrestling team when he competed at the New England Championship last weekend. Perry won two bouts in the 285-pound division at the New England meet, which took place at Methuen High School in Methuen, Massachusetts on March 7 and 8.

Perry lost a 7-3 decision against Manny Rosado of Walpole, Massachusetts in his first match at New Englands. In his first consolation bout, Perry pinned Jaylin Houston of New Haven at the 4:13 mark.

Perry pinned Pat Rescanski from Foran at the at the 3:45 mark in his next consolation match. In his next bout, Perry lost to No. 5 seed Adolfo Betancur from Providence, Rhode Island via pinfall at the 2:36 mark.

Perry entered the New England meet after having finished first for the 285-pound weight class at the Class S State Championship and third at the State Open.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K saw its season come to a close when the Cougars lost to Canton in the first round of the Class M State Tournament last week. On March 2, No. 31 seed H-K traveled to No. 2 seed Canton for its states opener and dropped a 64-47 decision to the Warriors. H-K finished its season with an overall record of 6-16.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars are competing in the Division V State Tournament as the No. 20 seed this week. With its overall record of 8-13, H-K will play at No. 13 Watertown for a first-round game on Monday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. With a win, H-K would play at No. 4 seed Somers in the second round at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. The quarterfinals are at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13; the semifinals take place on Tuesday, March 17; and the Division V state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena on either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug boys’ ice hockey squad is competing in the Division II State Tournament this week. The 11th-seeded Trojans (10-9-1) are playing at No. 6 seed Woodstock Academy in the first round on Monday, March 9. A win in that game would send them to meet the winner of No. 3 Farmington Valley and the No. 14 seed, the East Haven c-op, in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 13. The semifinals will be held at Ingalls Rink on Tuesday, March 17, and the Division II state final is at Ingalls Rink on Monday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m.
