Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball team finished up its regular season contests and began postseason play last week. The Knights ended regular-season play with a loss against Haddam-Killingworth. After that, No. 8 seed Westbrook took on top-seeded Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal and lost the contest. With the two defeats, Westbrook’s overall record fell to 8-14.

On Feb. 25, the Knights took a 77-53 road loss to Haddam-Killingworth. Westbrook fell behind 19-9 in the first quarter, and H-K extended its lead to 36-21 by the end of the first half. The Knights were outscored 41-31 in the second half to ultimately take the 77-53 defeat.

Jack Naccarato led Westbrook’s offense with 16 points, while Joey Caslin provided nine points in the loss. Brenden Engles (7), Brandon Naccarato (6), Sammy Freeman (4), and Luca Troop (4) also put some points on the board for the Knights.

On Feb. 29, Westbrook lost a 70-53 road contest against Old Lyme in the Shoreline quarters. The Wildcats got out to a hot start and took a 17-4 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Westbrook’s offense started to show some life, but Old Lyme still took a 41-17 advantage into halftime. The Wildcats added onto the lead with a 20-16 third quarter, and the Knights 11-point advantage in the 20-9 final frame proved too little too late.

Jack Naccarato poured in 22 points for the Knights, and Engles added 10 points. Jesse Whitney provided eight points, while Nick Palumbo scored four.

Next, the Knights will compete in the Division V State Tournament beginning on Thursday, March 5 and ending on Sunday, March 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
