The Guilford girls’ fencing team hosted Hand for its Senior Night meet on Feb. 24. The Indians celebrated Senior Night by earning an 18-9 victory over Tigers in their regular-season finale.
Guilford swept Hand by posting a 7-2 win for foil, a 6-3 win in saber, and a 5-4 victory in épée. Foilist Lindsey Smith went undefeated at the meet, while teammates Sophia Ruser and Sydney Provencher each came away with a no-touch bout. Saber fencer Adella Cho turned in a strong performance that saw her earn a 5-0 victory in a no-touch bout. The épée team was tied at 4-4 going into final round when Grace Banning delivered a win to seal the victory for Guilford.
The seniors on the team that were honored as part of the Senior Night festivities were captains Smith (foil), Banning (épée), and Shayla Flynn (saber), along with Provencher (foil), Cho (saber), Valerie Qiang (épée), Anna Angkatavanich (saber), Julie Gangemi (épée), and team manager Ava McClure.
Boys’ Fencing
The Indians competed against Hand in their Senior Night matchup last week. Guilford lost to the Tigers by the final score of 14-12 on Feb. 24.
Guilford earned 5-4 victories in épée and saber, while taking a 6-3 defeat for foil in its contest with Hand. Saber fencers Owen Angkatanich and Calder Scott put forth strong performances that resulted in 5-0 victories with no touches from their opponents. Peter Keanna earned a 5-0 win in a no-touch bout for the foil team.
The seniors for Guilford who were recognized as part of Senior Night were captain Adin Jennings (épée), along with Wilson Gou (saber), Calvin Leete (foil), and Ava McClure, who is the team’s manager.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team clinched the SCC Division 2 title by earning a home victory versus divisional opponent Sheehan in its regular-season finale on Senior Night. On Feb. 24, the Warriors hosted Sheehan and prevailed 100-70 at Walter Gawrych Community Pool to win the crown with a record of 6-0 in divisional meets. GNH finished with an overall mark of 8-2 for the regular season.
Later in the week, North Haven freshman Christian Butler earned a medal by finishing in sixth place at the SCC Diving Championship on behalf of the Warriors.
The Warriors honored North Haven student Stephen Borrelli and fellow senior captains Aidan Henry and Evan Laughlin of Guilford as part of their Senior Night festivities prior to their meet against Sheehan. Borrelli swam a lifetime-best time of 2:06.48 in the 200 freestyle in the victory. Henry went undefeated in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyles during the regular season.
Junior Tanner Powell swam a lifetime best of 1:02.65 in the 100 butterfly for GNH. Junior Collin Romero turned in a lifetime best of 28.43 for the 50 freestyle, while freshman Patrick Cucchiarelli did a lifetime best in the 100 freestyle (59.60) to go with a season-best in the 100 backstroke (1:09.75).
Other swimmers who recorded season-best marks were junior Dan Kamen in the 200 individual medley (2:13.52), junior Cameron Cargan in the 200 freestyle (1:58.09); freshman Aiden Cohen (24.62), freshman Lucas Espinosa (26.03), and sophomore Miguel Pearce (26.19) in the 50 freestyle; and freshman RT Trotter in the 100 butterfly (1:05.34) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.01)
Butler posted a lifetime-best score of 209.80 for a six-dive routine during the Warriors’ win against Sheehan. Later in the week, Butler competed at the SCC Diving Championship and claimed sixth place by scoring 321.25 points for his 11-diving performance at Sheehan High School on Feb. 28. Butler scored points that will count toward the Warriors’ total when they swim at the SCC Championship this week.
After SCCs, GNH will compete in the Class LL State Championship, beginning with the Diving Championship at Middletown High School on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. The Class LL Swimming Trials will take place at East Hartford High School on Saturday, March 14 at 11:30 p.m., and the Class LL Swimming State Championship will be held at Wesleyan University on Tuesday, March 17 at 6 p.m.
Girls’ Wrestling
Guilford freshman Brianna Seixas earned a fourth-place finish at the inaugural Girls’ Wrestling Invitational last weekend. Seixas took fourth place in the 145-pound division while representing the Indians at the tournament, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 28 and 29.
Seixas lost a 13-12 decision in her opening bout, but then won three bouts in the consolation rounds to reach the third-place matchup. Seixas won a 13-4 majority decision and notched a pinfall victory to start off the consolation bracket. She then earned another win by pin in the consolation semis. Seixas lost a 7-6 decision in the third-place matchup to finish in fourth place for the 145-pound division at the invitational.
Boys’ Wrestling
The Indians were represented by three athletes when the State Open Championship took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 28 and 29. Guilford finished in a tie for 51st place by scoring 12 points at the meet.
In the 106-pound division, senior Mohammad Halabi won his first match by pinfall. Halabi lost his next match on a decision, then came back to get a pinfall win in the consolation rounds. In his final bout, Halabi lost a 9-2 decision.
Sophomore Brent Strand won his first contest by a 6-0 decision in the 160-pound division. Strand lost a 5-3 decision in his next bout, then came back to win via a 11-1 decision in his first consolation match. Strand lost a 10-6 decision in his next consolation bout.
Sophomore John Fernandes competed at 113 pounds for the Indians. Fernandes lost his first match on a pin and then took a loss in his first consolation bout.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Guilford finished its regular season by earning a 5-2 win over the East Haven co-op at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink on Feb. 24. The Indians, who went 7-12-1 for regular-season play, are playing in the Division II State Tournament that gets underway with first-round games on Monday, March 9.
Boys’ Basketball
The Indians split their last two games of the regular season and then took a loss in the first round of the SCC Tournament last week. Guilford has an overall record of 9-12 on the year.
On Feb. 24, Guilford lost a home game against divisional opponent Amity by the final score of 63-62. The Indians finished with a record of 4-4 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division this year. Senior John Petonito scored 30 points for Guilford in the game.
The very next day, the Indians earned an 83-47 victory over Wilcox Tech in a road contest. Petonito had 21 points in the win.
Then on Feb. 27, Guilford opened the SCC Tournament as the No. 14 seed and took a 70-60 defeat at No. 3 seed Shelton in first-round action. The Indians are competing in the Division II State Tournament beginning this week.
Girls’ Basketball
Guilford begins the Class L State Tournament as the No. 23 seed this week. The Indians, who have an overall record of 8-12, are traveling to No. 10 seed Naugatuck for a first-round game on Tuesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.
With a win, Guilford would play the winner of No. 7 Wethersfield and No. 26 Farmington in the second round Friday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. The quarterfinals are on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m.; the semifinals take place on Monday, March 16; and the Class L state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena on either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22.
