Greater New Haven Warriors Host Fundraiser for Lion Heart

On Feb. 18, the Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team held a Lion Heart Lap-a-Thon/Dive-a-Thon to raise money for cancer research on behalf of the Lion Heart Foundation. The boys’ swim teams from Amity and Coginchaug high schools joined the Warriors for the event, which took place at Walter Gawrych Community Pool in North Haven.

To date, GNH has raised $1,400 for the Lion Heart Foundation. Kathleen van Rijn, the founder of Lion Heart, attended the fundraiser and to spoke to the athletes who participated prior to the event.

The GNH Warriors are a co-op team that features athletes from North Haven, Guilford, East Haven, and North Branford. The team is coached by Head Coach Martha Phelan and diving coach Bob Lewis.

The North Haven students on the Warriors are senior captain Stephen Borrelli, junior captains Tanner Powell and Joe O’Connor, juniors Cameron Cargan, Raymond Lewis, and Ahmed Anwar; sophomore Kyle Borrelli, and freshmen Isaiah Becton and Christian Butler.

The Guilford athletes who compete for the team are senior captains Aidan Henry and Evan Laughlin, junior captain Daniel Kamen, juniors Collin Romero, Alan Penna, and David Zhang; sophomores Finn Henry and Miguel Pearce, and freshmen RT Trotter, Aiden Cohen, Lucas Espinosa, and Joey Gould.

The East Haven residents on the squad are sophomores Hethon Foster and Pavlo Melnyk and freshman Dylan Sobolewski.

The North Branford students who compete for GNH are junior Connor Coyne and freshmen Patrick Cucchiarelli and Spencer Carroll.
