The Old Saybrook girls indoor track team competed at the State Open at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 21. The Rams earned 10 points as a team and came in 19th place overall at the meet.
Grace Hanratty placed second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:01.94. In Pole Vault, Cate Coppes claimed a fifth-place finish with a height 10 feet-6 inches. Hannah Sumby placed 10th with a height of nine feet. Also competing at the meet was Autumn Szucs who came in 17th place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.53.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Rams’ boys’ indoor track team also took part in the State Open Championship on Feb. 21. Old Saybrook scored two points as a team and earned 40th place overall. Cody DeAngelo earned sixth place in the pole vault by clearing a height of 13 feet. The 1,600 Sprint Medley Relay quartet of Jack Colella, Nicholas Salemi, Luke Hanratty, and Cooper Luciani, claimed sixth place with a time of 3:44.54.
Luciani also came n 10th place in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:26.82
Girls’ Basketball
The Rams played their final game of the season last week against Shoreline Conference foe, East Hampton. Old Saybrook lost the contest versus the Bellringers and finished the year with a record of 2-18.
On Feb. 17, the Rams hosted East Hampton for their regular season finale, and Old Sayrbook took a 49-18 loss against the Bellringers. East Hampton took an early 13-2 lead at the end of the first and had a 19-2 lead at the end of the half. The Rams were outscored 30-16 in the second half.
Jenna Tully and Taylor Stone each had six points in the loss. Kayla Holt, Wendy Bowden, and Abby Bergeron had two points apiece.
Boys’ Basketball
Old Saybrook played three games last week and lost them all. With these defeats, the Rams’ record fell to 1-18 on the season.
On Feb. 18, Old Saybrook headed to East Hampton and took at 65-55 loss versus the Bellringers. The two squads finished the first quarter knotted at 18. East Hampton pulled away with a 24-10 second quarter. The Rams closed the gap in the third to get it to a 49-45 advantage for East Hampton. Ultimately East Hampton outscored Old Saybrook in the final quarter. Michael Almada led the Rams with 21 points while Riley Lawson scored 16, and Shon Ryan had eight points
Two days later, the Rams were in Durham to face Coginchaug and took a 62-52 loss versus the Blue Devils. Coginchaug took the first lead with a 20-14 first quarter, and added on in the second to make it 35-25 by the half. In the second half, Coginchaug expanded the lead outscoring Old Saybrook 27-24. Lawson provided 17 points for the Rams, while Davis Brown had 14 points.
On Feb. 21, Old Saybrook dropped a 58-54 game versus Hale-Ray. The Rams doubled up the Noises with an 18-9 first quarter and advanced the lead to 40-21 by halftime. Hale-Ray outscored the Rams 37-14 to get the come from behind victory.
Almada and Brown had 15 points apiece, while Ryan Stratton had 10 points.
